Packing efficiently when travelling with kids

The holidays are upon us and many people are dusting off luggage for a well-deserved break. However, while we might be professionals at packing for business trips, it is a whole different ball game when holidaying with children. Here are some packing tips to ensure you start your holiday right.

Clothing: Do your laundry while travelling. Remember, the less you pack, the more souvenirs and gifts you can bring home. To maximise space in your luggage, roll all items of clothing, and for easy retrieval, pack items in clear plastic or zipper bags.

Mix and match solid colours and avoid delicate fabrics like linen that wrinkle easily. Pack two sets of sleepwear and wash when necessary. Don’t forget to bring a jacket or cardigan per person. Pashminas are great for doubling up as blankets.

Footwear: Bring two comfortable pairs per person.

Cosmetics/toiletries: You can buy these easily during your trip so save space by packing less.

Medical kits: It’s better to be safe than sorry. Label your medicine carefully and check expiry dates. Don’t forget to pack bandages and dressing.

Plastic diaper disposal bags: These are great for containing unpleasant smells.

Snacks: Pack easy-to-carry titbits like raisins in case children (and adults) get peckish.

Baby sling/umbrella strollers: Convenience when moving around is priceless.

Straws: These take up less space than sippy cups.

Buy or rent at your destination: Unless you are travelling to a very remote area, many small items can be purchased at your destination, including diapers, baby wipes, toiletries and even milk powder. However, do your research first especially if your child is fussy or sensitive. Do note that most airports and airlines don’t provide these items so ensure you have enough with you when you fly. Gear like car seats can be rented when needed.

Toys/books: Just bring along one or two favourites. After all, when on holiday, there will be plenty of other activities to keep the kids busy.

Luggage: Share luggage as a family instead of packing separately for each person. You don’t want to be lugging around four suitcases with sleeping children in tow. Do put all your kids’ necessities in a separate bag such as a tote or backpack that can be easily carried around at all times.

Finally, don’t forget to have fun and protect yourself and your loved ones when on holiday with a good travel insurance.
