Message from Patrick Peck

Dear colleagues,

Another quarter has passed and change is yet again upon us, as we share our second issue of The Great Connect, specially for our rep community. This October issue comes at a very meaningful moment for us, just after our Final Sprint/Achievers Recognition where we talked about how we are on track to rounding off the year with a strong performance.

At the same time, I am excited and honoured to be appointed as Managing Director, Regional Agency/FA & Bancassurance. While we will miss Ben’s leadership, I look forward to taking on the mantle in these exciting times and working with you all to achieve more in our next lap as we transform the way we engage with customers into 2021 and beyond.

As we close the year with positive momentum in both sales and new talent recruitment, let’s carry this through into 2021. I’m happy to report that as of September, we have reached a record number in terms of building our team, and are well on our way to becoming the leading agency force in Singapore. While we grow our team by the day, one thing’s for sure – let’s continue to innovate in the way we reach out to our customers, in the way we communicate our live #lifeproof philosophy, how we partner to deliver Great solutions, to become a true Game Changer in the market.

A BIG thank you to our newly promoted leaders, our high performers, top sellers and great agency teams! The year 2020 is coming to a Great end, thanks to everyone’s commitment and effort.

Do keep your customer and success stories coming, and do share your feedback on how to Connect better with You!  I leave you with one of my favourite mantras:  “Never end the day without doing one thing right for Your Customer”.

Enjoy this issue’s stories!

Achievers Recognition & Final Sprint 2020
Achievers Recognition & Final Sprint 2020

Another FIRST for us in 2020, as we successfully held our virtual Achievers Recognition & Final Sprint 2020 on 6 October – two important and exciting events in the agency calendar!

The morning was off to a roaring start as Group Chief Executive Officer Khor Hock Seng revved the engine with a charged and inspiring address to over 3,000 attendees on the fantastic sales progress the past quarter. He urged all to continue our strong momentum to propel our way to success for the year.

Great Eastern has been able to outperform the industry and keep firmly to our goals and ambition to be the Number 1 agency in Singapore this year, due only to the passionate mindset and effort from each and every one in the agency force and company, he said.

With Great Eastern being appointed the insurer for the Dependants’ Protection Scheme (DPS) for the next five years, 98% of working Singaporeans are now our customers, an advantage no other insurer in Singapore has.

Urging all reps to make 2020 the best year ever, Mr Khor reiterated the three key points which have placed us in the winning position – to do the Right Things for our customers, to take the Right Action and to Think Big.

The Top Achievers Awards Presentation segment which followed turned the limelight on our leaders and financial reps who have performed exceptionally well in their roles, and their video interviews gave valuable insights into what drives them, and also the strong team they have behind them.

Awards were presented for categories such as Top Director, Top Growth, Top Manager, Top Recruiting Manager, Top Master Builder and more in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

Ben Tan, former MD of Regional Agency, FA & Bancassurance, reinforced the message that with a transformed mindset, by setting stretch goals to work towards, we will be able to conquer the New Future.

He said the company would continue to enhance digital platforms such as GreatAdvice, design products and attractive promotions for customers and improve processes to make business easier and more seamless.

Next up was A.S.K (Achievers Share Knowledge), a lively segment where various achievers shared tips and pointers over a range of relevant topics such as how to reach out to the new-to-workforce group, ace your sales or get new leads through referrals, and others.

Guest speaker Mr Robert Kiyosaki, renowned author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, shared his top tips for success – read below to find out more!

Closing the event on a high note was Patrick Peck, now MD of Regional Agency, FA & Bancassurance, who shared the Final Sprint consumer promotions and Conquer the Future Challenge. He also urged all to stretch our lead as the Number 1 agency and play a proactive role in shaping the New Future.

His parting quote from Christopher Reeves (Superman) - “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable” -- aptly sums up the incredible year it has been so far.

Achievers Recognition & Final Sprint 2020 received great feedback from the attendees and all achievers also received a special celebration gift delivered to their doorstep.

Riley Koh (ESP, Dir Goh Chan Joo) commented, “Always excited to attend the Final Sprint and even more so with Robert Kiyosaki as one of the speakers. GREAT sharing! I’m all fuelled up for Q4!”

John Koh (SFP, Dir Goh Chan Joo) said of his takeaways: “Sales is truly the only way to exceed performance exponentially and communication skills is key to this success. Never give up, never change your goals, but only adjust your game plan to suit the current climate.”

In Search of Great Talent!

The past few months have been exciting as we actively engaged potential reps through various programmes and platforms, from Great Internship to #Lifeproof Academy masterclass. Through these programmes, we hope to find the right people to join our passionate agency team and reach out to even more Singaporeans to help them with their protection and financial goals.

Find out what went on, and what new initiatives are in store!

The Great Internship

The Great Internship 2020 was held virtually for the first time from 29 June to 24 July. Planned over four weeks, the programme gave the student interns from NTU, NUS, SMU and SIM a better understanding of the financial services industry and the career as a financial representative. Interns were also taught how to embrace, adapt and thrive in the new norm, taking remote productivity to the next level.

To make the programme more exciting, we included challenges for the interns, with attractive prizes to be won of course! In groups, they were tasked to complete two challenges – to role-play as a rep and engage four different prospects with specific needs and to come up with a recruitment video and business development strategy – and presented both challenges to a panel of judges on the presentation day.

Well done to all our interns, and we look forward to more engagement in 2021!

Lifeproof Academy Masterclasses

Learning made easy!  #LifeProof Academy, which was held virtually on 29 and 30 July was more than just a recruitment drive. It was an opportunity for our reps cum speakers to educate and drive awareness among interested candidates through bite-sized educational webinars on trending and relevant topics such as supercharging your financial knowledge, personalising your digital brand and leveraging social media for business.

In Search of Great Talent!

PROJECT MORE (Coming Up!)

More, more and more! We definitely want MORE! Of what you may ask… Project MORE is our new recruitment programme tailored for interested mid-career individuals with an interest in insurance. We want to tap on the experience of these individuals and offer them an attractive and stable career with us. Look out for more details coming your way soon!

Tips from One of Our PLR3 Top Sellers

Ken Toh Yong Wei, Financial Consultant, Marcus Chua & Associates

Q: As someone who has joined the company only a year ago, what is the “secret sauce” for your success?

My secret sauce is my family, who is my main motivation. You must also have passion in life, and I have found my passion at Great Eastern as a financial consultant.

Q: What do your clients like best about Prestige Life Rewards 3?

My clients choose this plan because of the passive income payout after the fourth policy year and how it helps them with wealth accumulation.

Q: Any sales advice for new financial representatives?

Keep persevering, don’t give up and continue to follow up with customers. They might not want to invest now, but that doesn’t mean they will not invest in the near future. Trust and relationship build over time. Always stay positive in life.

Lim Kopi with Glenn Yong, Head of Agency Business Development

Lim Kopi with Glenn Yong

Join us as we lim kopi with our senior leaders and find out what makes them tick, keeps them going and their big dreams for the team!

1) Your top memories @ Great Eastern

I started my journey with Great Eastern in 1996 as a financial representative. I was in my final year at the National University of Singapore then and I remember the first few years vividly - studying for the exams while juggling my school work, making many cold calls and reaching out tirelessly to potential customers. I worked really hard and also had great times with the team - we worked hard and played hard!

Fast forward 24 years and I’m still making great memories every day with my team!  I really enjoy and treasure the opportunity to mentor my team of 26 folks, helping them develop and succeed in contributing to our role supporting our 4,800 financial representatives who in turn impact the lives of millions of customers.

2) What keeps you going when the going gets tough?

To be able to perform at my peak continuously, I keep healthy so that I’m always in the best state of mind to manage the daily demands and challenges of our work. Having a healthy diet, exercising, making sure I get enough rest and water is very important. I try to incorporate these into my daily life. I hit the gym as often as I can, and engage in sports (such as swimming, table tennis, playing golf and cycling) on the weekends with my family. Unwinding with some miraculous ‘power drinks’ also helps!

3) What makes a good/successful financial representative?

Putting in hard work is a must, but the hunger to succeed and the strong motivation to leave a mark really makes the difference from Good to Great! Equally important is having empathy for customers and the team, and the desire to impact lives of those around you (your customers, your teammates or the people you lead).

4) What are your aspirations for the agency force in the next five years?

The insurance industry can be noisy and competitive. My hope is that Great Eastern will increasingly be recognised for having a professional, credible agency force who truly cares for our customers, especially during crunch time. That we are there for our customers when they need us, to “lifeproof” them against life’s challenges as our brand promises. We are getting on the right track, and my team and I are committed to supporting the agency and financial reps to make this happen every single day in the Great Eastern way.

5) Tell us something new about you

Before I officially entered the workforce, I’ve had a myriad of interesting work experiences - a swim coach, focus group/market research recruiter, a tour leader bringing Singaporeans to Australia, New Zealand and Europe, and I even worked as a GO (guest officer) with Club Med! I believe that these experiences really gave me a headstart into the real world and enabled me to meet so many different kinds of people, which has translated into valuable interactions and learnings which I still carry with me today.

And for something more current that not many may know of – these days, I do a lot of my work life research on TikTok (yes TikTok!) and engage in card games with mates to build greater mental focus and improve concentration.

Defining Your Own Success

Defining Your Own Success

Interview with Jasmine Tan, Executive Senior Financial Consultant, Marcus Chua & Associates

1. What made you decide to move from being a private banker to being a financial representative with Great Eastern?

Firstly, I had limited insurance solutions for my clients when I was in the bank and was not able to provide them with holistic financial advice. Being in Great Eastern, I now have the necessary tools to ensure that my clients’ insurance needs are well taken care of.

Secondly, I was seeking for better work life balance and being a financial representative allows me to be in control of my time and what I set out to achieve.

2. What do you find most fulfilling about this role?

The most fulfilling part about my role as a financial representative is that I can define my own success. To me, success is derived more from the happiness and gratitude that I receive from the interactions I have with my clients, and less the titles and achievements that comes along with it. I believe that if you start off with empathy, success and fulfilment will follow.

3. With the COVID-19 situation, this year has been challenging for many. How did you manage to do so well in spite of the challenges?

During this uncertain period, it became evident to most of my clients that long-term financial planning such as income accumulation and wealth protection is important. I am blessed that my clients put their faith in me and that my advice can provide them with peace of mind to weather through uncertain times.

4. What advice would you give someone who is considering a career shift to join the insurance industry?

If your current job isn’t fulfilling or bringing you happiness, take that leap of faith because the end results of being in the insurance industry can bring satisfaction and success to you and the people around you.

5. What is your motto at work/in life?

My work motto – A happy and fulfilling career will not be built by itself. It has to be cultivated and developed with commitment, focus and empathy.

My personal motto – Stay happy and count my blessings.

Doing Good Starts with Us

Interview with Steve Cheng, Director, Pinnacle Financial Group

1.      Please share with us the CSR activities you have participated in or organised over the past few years.

In 2014, the Pinnacle Financial Group leaders set up a CSR committee as we wanted to give back to the community. Since then, we have been involved in the Yellow Ribbon Project, and have worked together with Singapore Children Society and Lion Befrienders to engage their beneficiaries. We also visited an orphanage in Vietnam. During the Circuit Breaker period this year, we delivered food to the elderly at SWAMI Home. Around 70% of the agency group participates in these activities.

Doing Good Starts with Us

(Photos above) Visit to an orphanage in Vietnam

2.      Why did you decide to get involved?

I started being involved in such activities in 2014, the same year I became a father. As a parent, I wanted to do more to help underprivileged children.

The Yellow Ribbon project for example involves organising a day activity for ex-offenders and their children. These parents have been separated from their children for very challenging reasons. And being a new father, I can identify with how a father feels having to separate from their children.

The visit to a Vietnam orphanage in 2015 was a very memorable experience. The team was in Vietnam and made arrangements to visit the orphanage. After hearing the needs of the orphanage, we emptied our wallets (some even converted other currencies so that we could consolidate a larger amount) and went to the local supermarket and bought milk powder, diapers and the other daily necessities for the children.

The majority of our representatives are young and single, and do not have children of their own yet. To see them carrying the babies and playing with the children at the orphanage with such love and empathy was very moving, and I could see that they were impacted as well.

3.      What are your reflections from the experiences and what have you learnt in the process?

Actually the people who benefit most is my team and I. It is indeed true that gratitude reciprocates. When you are involved in the lives of those who are less fortunate, it forces you to face the social disparities and consider how we can contribute and make a difference with the resources that we have.

This requires good balancing and the same goes for our lives. With the limited resources that I have, how do I make the best out of my ability to contribute and provide for society, my agency and family at the same time. Now CSR has become part of my everyday life, even in the small ways.

4.      Any words of encouragement to those who may be considering getting more involved in the community?

There are so many charities and organisations around. You don't need a big reason to do good, just choose an organisation whose mission you support and identify with and just go with it.

Top 3 Tips To Be Successful by Robert Kiyosaki

Author of best-selling book “Rich dad, Poor Dad” Robert Kiyosaki shares his top tips for success at the Achievers Recognition & Final Sprint 2020.

1.      Embrace failure

“If you want to be successful, you need to fail more than anybody else out there.”

Robert shared how he built skills in communications and sales by joining Xerox, only to find out that he was too shy for the job.

After his sales manager threatened to have him fired, he took on a night-time job to help a non-profit organisation make sales calls, knowing he would be further rejected, all with the goal of building his own skillset and confidence for sales.

2.      Be disciplined

“How many sales calls do you make? When do you start preparing for the week? Monday afternoon or Sunday night?”

Kiyosaki shared a story about how a former colleague started work on Sunday evenings to draft sales proposals for customers. Making the effort to be disciplined and to start preparing early is key. Today, his colleague has reaped the rewards of his hard work having recently sold his $2 billion dollar business.

3.      Surround yourself with people who will help you.

“Find a friend who wants to learn as much as you do”.

Kiyosaki encourages us to surround ourselves with those who want to succeed and who want us to succeed, so that as a group, we can grow, learn and practice together. By practising how to respond to customers in different scenarios, we can build up skills and eventually confidence which will help in sales pitches.

In sum, Communication is key. It is ALL about the grind and the people you hang out with. Success does not come easy but when it does, the rewards are worth fighting for.
