More Protection with GREAT Covid Care Plan!

More Protection with GREAT Covid Care Plan

Hot off the press!

The GREAT Covid Care Plan was launched on 25 June, a complimentary post-vaccination protection plan available to all Singapore residents.

The plan provides a cash payout of S$200 per day of hospitalisation up to a total of $2,000, in the event one is hospitalised due to COVID-19 after their vaccination. Coverage is worldwide to provide additional peace of mind for Singaporeans who may travel abroad for work or leisure, and for overseas residents returning to their home country for visits as countries start to open up.

This free coverage applies to any Singapore resident who has completed his/her first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine approved for use by the Health Sciences Authority or supplied under the Special Access Route (SAR). Coverage also includes children who have been vaccinated and parents may register on behalf of their children who are under 18.

Registration is required to activate the free coverage and the plan provides coverage for 12 months from the date of registration or when the individual receives his/her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, whichever is later. The sign up period ends on 30 September 2021 and applicants must also complete their first vaccination dose by 31 December 2021 to qualify for the coverage.

Real Talk with Ronnie Tan, Group Chief Financial Officer

Real Talk with Ronnie Tan

1.    You joined Great Eastern in 2002. Do share with us about your journey here and your current role as Group Chief Financial Officer.

Not many people know that my first role in Great Eastern was with the Distribution Division (now called RAFABA) to set up our financial advisory firm called Alpha Financial Advisers, later renamed as Great Eastern Financial Advisers.

After six months there, I was transferred to the Finance & Corporate Affairs Division (now called Group Finance) where I was responsible for Investor Relations and Investment Accounting & Operations. In addition to these day-to-day responsibilities, I spent a large portion of my time on a series of Enterprise Risk Management projects.

Three years later, I was pulled out to establish the Group Risk Management (GRM) function. A handful of Finance colleagues in Singapore and Malaysia joined me. We were probably the first insurer in Asia which had a standalone Risk Management function then.

The instruction given then was to do what I thought was necessary. I brought the small team to Malacca for 3-4 days and there we discussed till midnight on our purpose, mission statement, vision statement and list of things to do. We concluded then that GRM’s purpose is to “Safeguard Great Eastern’s Financial Strength and Reputation”. A colleague led the team in Malaysia to develop our Operational Risk Management framework while I led the team in Singapore to develop our Financial Risk Management framework.

We were fortunate that the Board had the foresight to set up GRM in 2006, which gave us a few years to establish a groupwide view of our risk exposures before the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) hit, which was a major stress for the insurance industry. We went through the GFC bruised, but rebounded well. After the GFC, the demand for Risk Management increased significantly and the GRM team grew exponentially.

After over 10 years in GRM, I was appointed Group Chief Financial Officer. To me, beyond safeguarding the financial resources of the company, the key role of Finance is to allocate the company’s financial resources to drive its strategic objectives.

Over the past few years, Finance has focused on tightening the controls on day-to-day wastages, while putting the company’s financial resources towards strengthening our distribution channels and enhancing our digital capabilities, such as acquiring a general insurance company in Indonesia and our strategic investment in Boost Holdings under our partnership with Axiata Digital.

2.    What are the key areas covered by Finance and are there any upcoming projects you would want to share about?

The key areas covered by Finance are typical of any other insurer. They include accounting, actuarial, pricing, tax, balance sheet management, investor relations, etc.

Implementing IFRS 17 (the new accounting standard for insurance contracts) is the most significant project for Finance, not just in Great Eastern but also in all insurers globally. IFRS 17 will require Finance to reorganise itself as the knowledge of actuaries and accountants need to be better integrated.

3.    What do you think are the opportunities for an insurer like Great Eastern? (e.g. with digitalisation, the new economy, product innovation, etc.)

Multiple trends seem to point to the fact that Great Eastern is at the right place at the right time. These include:

  • Money flowing from US/Europe and China/HK to Singapore
  • Growing population and wealth in Southeast Asia
  • Insurance being the new frontier of digital ecosystems
  • Embracing of the gig economy and entrepreneurship makes financial advisory an attractive career option for people in their 20s and early 30s

The key question is whether we are able to seize on the multiple opportunities presented to us or let the opportunities slip through our fingers. The willingness and ability to change what we do and how we do things are critical.

We should be prepared to throw away the “what” and the “how”, while holding on to the “why”, the purpose for our existence, which is to serve our customers’ needs with our great products and excellent service.

4.    In your opinion, what is the most important quality in a Finance leader?

To me, the most important quality of any leader is the ability to instil a sense of purpose in the people that he or she leads.

In a work context, this means coming up with a team purpose that is not only shared by all members of the team, but also links to the company’s goals and objectives.

5.    What keeps you going/inspires you?

I wrote down some years ago that my life purpose is to help people around me discover their life purpose. It is actually more difficult than it sounds, and I am still working on it.

6.    What do you like to do in your free time (outside of work)?

I enjoy daydreaming about how my retirement will be like – where will I be, who will I be spending time with, what will I be doing? One of the many ideas that my wife and I have is for us to spend each year in a different country, working part time and travelling around to really get to know the people and culture of that country.

Placing Customers at the Centre – Updates from GELS HOD Town Hall

Placing Customers at the Centre – Updates from GELS HOD Town Hall

The HOD Town Hall held on 4 May was a hybrid session held onsite at CFE and online with insightful presentations by GCEO, Nicholas Lee, Colin Chan, Keith Chia, James Lee and Hong Siu Ming.

The post Q1-2021 results Town Hall kicked off with GCEO‘s call on all employees to do their part to keep up the strong momentum of 2020 to maintain our leadership position. To achieve this, he reiterated the strong need to do things differently and ‘Move Together As One’, to achieve our objectives.

Customer Insights was the main focus of this Town Hall, with Nicholas Lee, Head of Centre for Design Insights & Innovation (CDI2), presenting a dive into the evolution of customer insights in the company. Speaking on how CDI2 will contribute to Great Eastern’s focus on walking the talk in customer centricity, he said that CDI2 would be focused on supporting business units with full time research and translation of customer insights into actionable propositions and ideas.

CDI2’s Charter:

a.    Being a ‘hub of knowledge and insight’ that understands customers (both current and future), distribution partners, and internal stakeholders, and make sense of the interactions between these entities through the use of data science

b.    Knowledge-sharing and sharing of insights with relevant business units so that key opportunities can be identified to co-create more effective, efficient, smarter experiences for stakeholders

c.     Supporting business units in designing and measuring the impact of improved experiences in objective ways to ensure real value has been delivered, as well as allowing for better decision making

Check out the department update that they wrote to commemorate the formation of the new team.

Continuing the spotlight on customer-first, Colin Chan, MD of Group Marketing presented the latest Multipay Critical Illness Campaign as an example of how we used insights to produce increasingly customer-centric products. Developed by CDI2’s Actionable Consumer Insights team, Colin talked about how insights were used and translated into solutions throughout the whole product development process with good results. The campaign was picked up by media sites such as AsiaOne and Marketing Interactive

Keith Chia, Head of Group Brand and Marketing, then shared about our brand refresh initiative, which will focus on who we are, what we stand for as an organisation, and how we deliver on our promise to our customers.

Updating all on Culture Transformation, James Lee, MD of Group Human Capital (GHC) talked about Engage, Learn and Live for this year. GHC’s programme will focus on ensuring that expectations of the Core Values and Generic Skills and Competencies (GSCs) are aligned with how employees demonstrate the GSCs.

James also shared about the Sustainability Challenge that started on 10 May, in line with World Environment Day on 5 June. To encourage all Great Eastern team to embrace sustainability as a lifestyle, the challenge was open to both employees and financial representatives. All staff could take part in activities not only in the office but also around Singapore.

Following the updates of the Workplace Transformation programme at the previous Staff Townhall, Hong Siu Ming, Head of People and Culture and Group Rewards, provided updates of the successful move of various business units from GEC to the Changi Campus. Check out some of the pictures taken related to the move below!

GETB Enables Virtual Learning in the Community

GETB Enables Virtual Learning in the Community
GETB Enables Virtual Learning in the Community

While digitalisation has accelerated and helped our business, there are underprivileged communities who are unable to enjoy the benefits of digitalisation due to their lack of access to digital tools.

To address this need, GETB set aside RM21,000 for a Virtual Learning Assistance Programme in the first half of 2021 and donated computers and a laser printer to Rumah Perlindungan Nur Hati and the Orang Asli community in Kampung Orang Asli Sg Gabong.

Rumah Perlindungan Nur Hati was set up by an NGO and houses 55 needy women and children who needed a place to stay. However, the NGO was struggling to support all of their wards. GETB’s laptop donation enabled the children who did not have their personal laptops to have the opportunity to join their online classes.

The laptops also helped the home with their online business, Nur Hati Market, which was set up by the Chairman of the NGO to help the young adults in the home to generate their own income.

While the shop was popular for its inexpensive products, as a relatively new shop, it faced several challenges such as the lack of initial capital and the young adults were relying on the Chairman’s personal laptop to run the shop. Fears that the business would not be able to continue were amplified because of the movement restriction order. GETB’s timely donation helped to keep their business up and running.

For the Orang Asli community in Kg Sungai Gabong, Bentong, there was lack of access to computers and Internet service. With a lockdown in place, the children were unable to join the more affluent Malaysian students for online learning. Our contribution to the 80-odd schoolchildren in the village in the form of three desktop computers, a printer and prepaid Internet access helped most of the older children to keep up with their schoolwork.

As we progress as a business, let us keep in mind the communities around us and continue to be a company that cares for our communities.

Mental Health Matters – Introducing GELI’s Mental Health Series

Mental Health Matters – Introducing GELI’s Mental Health Series

To create greater awareness of the importance of mental health, GELI recently held a Mental Health Series for its employees to encourage them to take care of their not just their physical health but also their mental health. Read on to find out more about their exciting line-up of activities.

Activity 1: How to become a Proactive Individual

If you were feeling the drag of working from home, the first activity held on 14 April was just for you! Titled “Easy Ways to Become Proactive Individual”, Cak Bagio, an expert in Management Leadership, Human Resources, shared his tips to encourage a growth mindset to help you be productive and efficient during this period of working from home. No worries if you missed it because we have summarised his tips below:

Tip 1:
Change your mindset, be proactive. Currently, we are facing three disruptions -- Digitalisation, Millennials who are the up-and-coming generation of consumers, and COVID-19. In order to overcome these disruptions, we need to change our way of thinking so that we remain relevant.

Tip 2:
Let’s not just THINK proactively, we should also BE proactive! Take control of the situation, have initiative and do something to make things happen instead of reacting only when things happen.

Tip 3:
Be positive and proactive, this is the winning formula to success! Being positive changes how we see the world and creates positive behaviour that can create better results. Having both attributes will definitely help you to be more productive.

Activity 2: Cook up a Storm as You Work from Home!

The second Mental Health Series activity was the Ramadhan Virtual Cooking Class held on 17 April.

This was the first time Human Capital held a GELI virtual cooking activity in collaboration with Joyful Cooking Class featuring Chef Erwin. He taught the participants how to make mango sago and jhon bread ala mama and now you can make it too! Make your own mango sago recipe here!

We are thankful to everyone who has worked with us on various projects through the years.  We can proudly say that “Together, we have always strived to make our customers central to the design of our products and services”.

Along with the change of name comes an expansion of the purpose for which we exist within Great Eastern. Three inter-dependent departments have been established to help extend our efforts towards making our organisation a more customer-centric one:

1. Actionable Customer Insights (ACI) Lab

Researching on all different segments of customers in order to gain relevant and actionable insights that can add value to our products, services and even business strategy.

3. Customer Experience Management (CEM)

Architecting and designing an organic system linked to key identified customer touchpoints to understand the state of our customers’ experiences with us and to investigate problem areas.

While our name has changed, what remains unchanged is our commitment to our customers and stakeholders. We look forward to relevant collaborations with all of you as we forge ahead to put our customers at the center of everything we do!
