First-ever Great Eastern Women IPPT event makes “Herstory”

Close to 600 women turned up at the Singapore Sports Hub on Saturday 24 August to make ‘herstory’ by participating in the first-ever Great Eastern Women’s Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT). A record was also set for the ‘First-ever Women’s Mass IPPT', entering the Singapore Book of Records for this feat.

Comprising three components – Push Ups, Sit-Ups and 2.4km run, the Great Eastern Women’s IPPT is a non-competitive fitness assessment to help women assess their fitness levels, set achievable fitness goals and track their future progress in the long run.

With a point system referenced and adapted from the standards used by servicewomen, participants who  obtain ≥ 51 points over the three stations will achieve a ‘GOOD’ grade while scoring ≥ 75 points will  get them a ‘GREAT’ grade. All participants received a limited edition GE Women’s IPPT tote-bag and $10 Starbucks gift card upon completion of the IPPT.

“With this new initiative, we have once again upped the ante to provide ladies an additional opportunity to better understand their body in their fitness journey. It is also very exciting for us to continuously witness how this community of women from all walks of life and fitness levels grow stronger – running, training and living better,” said Keith Chia, Head, Group Brand and Marketing, Great Eastern.

International Dragon Awards Annual Meeting 2019

This year’s International Dragon Awards (IDA) Annual Meeting 2019 was held at IMPACT Bangkok, Thailand from 10 to 13 August. Founded in 1998, this prestigious insurance conference attracts Chinese insurance and financial professionals from around the world to network, learn best practices and share their own experiences with other industry professionals.

This year saw more than 7,500 insurance and financial professionals from more than 17 countries and 200 insurance companies in attendance. The theme for this year’s IDA Annual Meeting was ‘稳.劲’—“The Force of Momentum” and comprised 75 forums and lectures. The topics covered sales performance and management experience and the sessions were helmed by invited expert speakers to help the delegates stay abreast of the latest industry trends.

Great Eastern’s Executive Senior Director, Shenile Teo, was one of the guest speakers and she shared her management experience in leading a new generation of young financial representatives. The key to successfully onboarding new recruits was to cultivate the right moral values and company culture to align with the team’s underlying passion and career motivations. To stay connected to their younger financial representatives and help them forge a meaningful career, she encouraged agency leaders on the need to be receptive to new ideas. Apart from having competent management skills, Ms Teo shared the importance of adopting digitalisation to keep pace with the younger generation and used the illustration of Great Eastern’s newly developed prospecting tool, GreatAdvice, to increase engagement with clients and to raise awareness on the importance of having sufficient protection coverage for the client’s insurance, wealth and legacy needs.

GEFA Career Seminar

The 2nd GEFA Career Seminar for 2019 and was held on 17 July at Orchard Mandarin Hotel. This seminar attracted twice as many attendees as past seminars, with a majority of them being tertiary graduates.

The GEFA Career Seminar aims to give the attendees insights and provide information into the career path of a financial advisor. GEFA Chief Executive Offier Ms Jesslyn Tan, in her opening address, said: “We are here to build a career, a career that impacts lives”, and this helped to set the stage for an inspiring 2-hour seminar.

Headlining the seminar were two young financial advisory managers who have achieved milestones in their careers, and they shared their personal reasons and motivations for joining the profession.

Senior manager Ms Cassandra Quek related her first-hand experience of seeing how having insurance had benefitted her family members and loved ones.

Executive senior manager Jacob Chew shared that joining the financial advisory business had been a conscious choice and one that has changed his life. He encouraged the attendees to choose wisely and not let the overwhelming number of choices affect one’s decision-making to make a difference to other people’s lives.

Rounding up the evening was special guest speaker and Mediacorp actor Mr Chew Chor Meng who had inspired many with his struggles of dealing with a debilitating illness.  He emphasised the importance of good financial planning and was grateful to the vital role played by his financial consultant as key to giving him financial assurance and security.

You can catch the video highlights of this GEFA career seminar at the YouTube channel GEFA Studios here.

2019 Newly Promoted GSM and USM Mid-Year Recharge

Every year, GELM’s newly promoted Group Sales Managers (GSMs) and Unit Sales Managers (USMs) will gather for a 3D-2N development programme to celebrate their achievements and promotions. For the class of 2019, the participants were treated to an exclusive educational mid-year recharge session at the Swiss Garden Hotel in Malacca from 11 to 13 July.

To give the participants a better perspective on agency management, the organising committee challenged the participants to work together to solve issues and to set their personal goals. The participants also discussed the importance of sales and recruitment as part of the agents’ career development path. To encourage and motivate the participants, top-performing producers were invited to share their own personal journeys and to demonstrate that both sales and recruitment were closely linked to the agency’s overall success.

The participants didn’t just work hard, they played hard too! There was the outdoor dinner expedition at Portuguese Settlement, a treasure hunt along the historic streets of Jonker Walk as part of the team-building games as well as a karaoke session with GELM Chief Executive Officer Dato Koh Yaw Hui.

The highlight of the programme was the unveiling of Great Link, a new communicator mobile application designed for agents to receive notifications of the latest products, contests, campaigns and events. They can also use the Great Link to view their personal work progress and track their sales results.

Static Challenge

The LIFE Programme is the anchor of Great Eastern’s health and well-being ambitions and consists of a series of health-focused workshops and activities targeted at staff to spur them on to better health. This year’s July Static Challenge attracted good participation with more than 200 participants taking up the challenge to complete four weekly sessions of high-energy and calorie-burning static workouts comprising Cardio Kickboxing, HiLo Aerobics and the HIIT workout.

LIFE Programme in Malaysia – the Wholesomeness Campaign

GREAT is empowering our employees to take charge of their health and wellbeing.

In June, GELM introduced the inaugural Hari Raya Art Contest as part of its Wholesomeness campaign, which focuses on building emotional wellness and reducing workplace stress. Encouraging art as a means of self-expression, participants coloured their own mandalas and customised their Hari Raya greetings.

The Sweat Off Depression and Anxiety event held in August – in collaboration with MyPerintis, an NGO promoting youth empowerment – gave staff valuable tips and techniques to manage workplace stress and prevent the onset of depression.

For the next few months, GELM staff  look forward to keeping fit and healthy through the “Hustle2Muscle” campaign, where they can improve their health status by having regular health checks, attending LIFE Programme activities, and participating in the Steps Challenge. Staff who achieved “healthy” results can stand to win amazing prizes such as Fitbits, Sudio Niva, as well as JD Sports vouchers!

Great Eastern awarded LOMA Excellence in Education 2018 Award at LIMRA LOMA Executive Roundtable

tgt2019-08-6-2awardgelm

GELM was the recipient of the LOMA Excellence in Education 2018 award. This award recognises companies for outstanding efforts in talent development through LOMA’s professional designation programmes.

Award winners have to fulfill strict criteria such as staff successfully completing a minimum of 50 designation programme courses in 2018; having a high percentage of successful completions on all designation programme courses and demonstrating a 5% or more growth in successful course completions as compared to 2017.

With this award, it establishes GELM’s commitment to support its staff in completing the LOMA professional programmes through resources facilities.

GELM hosted the Malaysia LIMRA LOMA Executive Roundtable on 17 July with 33 participants from the industry taking part. These included the CEO of Malaysia Insurance Institute Shalini Pavithran and the Executive Secretary of Life Insurance Association of Malaysia Nancy Tan. The round table began with an opening speech by GELM Head of Human Capital, Mr Dennis Tan, and a special presentation by Chief Information Officer of LIMRA and LOMA, Mr Kartik Sakthivel, on the topic of Digital Disruption. Mr Kartik’s message to the industry leaders was to prepare for changes with cultural transformation and that customer-centricity is the key for insurance companies to power through the disruption caused by digitalisation.

Following the completion of the roundtable, Great Eastern LOMA representative Yeoh Zu Dian represented GELM to receive the award for LOMA Excellence in Education 2018. The roundtable participants were taken on a special tour around the Great Eastern Centre for Excellence and learnt about the training resources and facilities available before ending the day with a networking lunch as the Live Great Café.
