Prof. Benita Tan is a Senior Consultant and Chief of SGH General Surgery (Breast Service), Sengkang General Hospital, Senior Consultant in SGH General Surgery (Breast Service) and NUS Breast Centre.
Prof. Tan graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, NUS in 1995 and obtained her Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2000. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2003 and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore as a specialist in Surgery in 2003. She was awarded her PhD, at Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, NUS in 2013.
Active in research and education, Prof Tan is an Adj A/Prof in NUS and is a clinical faculty in our Singhealth General Surgery Residency Programme and Family Medicine Residency Programme. Her research interest is in breast cancer, in particular differences in tumour biology, breast cancer in elderly women, differences between ethnic groups and breast reconstruction.
Prof Tan's practice covers management and treatment of benign breast conditions and breast cancer including screening and detection, surgical management and follow up. She performs breast biopsies including vacuum assisted breast biopsy, breast cancer surgeries such as breast conserving cancer surgery from simple wide excision to wide excision with intra-operative radiotherapy, mastectomies including simple mastectomy, skin-sparing and nipple sparing mastectomy for breast reconstruction, sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary clearance. She is also performs oncoplastic breast surgery, a subspecialty that incorporates breast surgical oncology with plastic surgical techniques for partial breast reconstruction in breast cancer surgery, such as mastopexy and mammoplasty.
She believes patient care goes beyond just treating the cancer her patients have, hence she takes time to individualise treatment plans for her patients, to provide the best options for a long term good outcome. She has received several awards for outstanding service quality.
