Dr Chia was awarded a President’s Scholarship and a Local Merit Scholarship in 1990 to study medicine at the NUS, and graduated in 1995 on the Dean’s List, winning both the Brunel Hawes and Lim Boon Keng Medals for the year. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) for General Surgery in 2000, and received his FRCS for Orthopaedics & Traumatology 3 years later in 2003. Between 1998-1999 he served in the Singapore Navy as a Medical Officer, in charge of Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine, and oversaw naval medical research. In 2002 he was awarded an AO Fellowship to the AO Research Institute in Davos, Switzerland, where he worked on cartilage tissue engineering under the supervision of Prof Mauro Alini. He was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Postgraduate Scholarship, and obtained his PhD in Cartilage Biology from Imperial College, UK. His doctoral thesis on the role of FGF-2 as a modulator of cartilage homeostasis was done under Prof Jeremy Saklatvala at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology.

Between 2001-2007, Dr Chia completed clinical fellowships focusing on knee and lower limb surgery at leading centres in Japan, the UK and the USA. Upon completing his arthroplasty fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, he returned to Singapore in 2007 to rejoin the Adult Reconstruction Service of the Orthopaedic Department at SGH. Aside from his clinical interests in lower limb arthroplasty and cartilage repair, he remains committed to both research and teaching, and holds various academic and research appointments. He is frequently invited to deliver lectures and conduct courses both locally and internationally. He also holds various administrative appointments within the hospital and at the national level in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. His teaching commitments locally extend to NUS, NTU, Singapore Polytechnic. He is also a member of the Curriculum Advisory Board of the Bioengineering Program of UniSIM.
