Message from Patrick Peck, MD, Regional Agency / FA and Bancassurance

Dear Leaders and Financial Representatives,

As we sail into the final quarter of the year, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions. Your relentless commitment has been the driving force behind our continued success, and that’s how we are able to maintain the pole position among our competitors.

Congratulations to all who have achieved targets and qualified for GELAC Convention 2024! Your hard work is the embodiment of excellence. For those who are just shy of their targets, this is the time to rekindle your determination and stay focused, because success is often just around the corner. Your perseverance can make all the difference.

The final quarter is another opportunity for us to meet and exceed our targets. I assure you all that you are not alone in this battle: we have in place multiple exciting initiatives to put you in a winning position. Several consumer promotions have been launched to drive sales and reward our loyal customers. In addition, we have sales challenges to fuel your momentum. Company support will also be ramped up.

I also applaud everyone who had invested precious time to give back at this critical juncture:

  • For those who participated in the recent corporate CSR programmes such as fin lit mentoring, kudos for stepping forward to interact with our next generation, impart critical skills and help them Reach for Great!

  • For agencies who have organised their own CSR activities for community building and outreach, keep up this excellent work.
  • To all fundraisers of the Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023, it has been an amazing run indeed as you engaged prospects and customers and gave your all. To all who have donated to and canvassed for our fundraisers, big thank you too!

Time and tide never wait for anyone! Let’s make every second count in this final quarter, from achieving professional goals to closing in and working towards the next big hairy audacious ones. Together, we will complete 2023 on a new pinnacle!

The Final Sprint 2023: The race to be the indisputable industry champion, fourth year running!

Great Eastern’s The Final Sprint 2023 had a roaring start at Suntec Singapore on 28 September – 94 days before the year ends! Boosted by the electrifying atmosphere, our agency force was ready to race into Q4, steamroll and conquer, come what may!

The Final Sprint 2023

Welcoming more than 2,300 representatives, GCEO Mr Khor Hock Seng highlighted how Great Eastern has been the industry champion (Agency & FA) consecutively in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and rallied all attendees to ignite their passion, stay focused and take action to finish 2023 strongly as Number 1 once again. It is not about how we start or where we are today. It is how we cross the finish line that matters, and hence to make every day count!

Managing Director for Regional Agency, FA & Bancassurance, Patrick Peck, provided a simple analogy of ‘Rise and Shine’ to reinforce why and how we should outdo and outperform ourselves: to remain the indisputable Number 1 in the business. “There is no winning by accident,” he reminded. “Winning is a choice when we wake up and opt for action.”

Fresh from our Mid Year Boost, motivational guest speaker Gordon Hoo continued to fuel the adrenaline rush among the crowd. He shared his invaluable experiences for the last lap and reminded: It’s Not Over till It’s Over, so Fight to the End!

It’s also about helping customers save more in these challenging times besides having value-added propositions. From the SRS gameplan to the Great Wealth Multiplier 3, from targeting High Net Worth to the mass market, Managing Director for Group Marketing, Colin Chan called out various product promotions that would provide a leg up for sales.

To enable our agency force to close higher sales in Q4 2023, Head, SG – Agency, George Goh shared the support that they will receive from the Operations team. He also unveiled the destination for the inaugural Great Start ‘Freshmen’ Convention 2024 that will happen in Osaka, Japan. The crowd was also thrilled to learn that qualification for GELAC Convention 2025 was starting on 28 September itself!

The cherries on the cake were the va-va-voom Q4 2023 incentives shared by Head, Agency Business Development, Glenn Yong that complemented customer promotions.

So Leaders and Financial Representatives of Great Eastern, you are set for sweet success and now the ball’s in your court. Let’s Reach for Great Together and finish 2023 as the indisputable Number 1!

Managing Director of Regional Agency/ FA and Bancassurance, Patrick Peck, spoke at the International Finance Outlook Forum about the challenges and opportunities of life insurance market in Singapore, our salesforce transformation journey at Great Eastern, as well as the importance of enabling our Financial Representatives to help our customers achieve financial freedom.

Patrick, on behalf of Great Eastern, also hosted all 400 attendees for a celebratory dinner comprising local delicacies, with Head of Agency, George Goh delivering the closing address and a roaring toast to end off a rousing night.

The IDA conference has always been an enriching experience that promises both cultural immersion and professional growth. Catch you at the next one!

Thoughts from some of the IDA attendees:

Hail, Dragons of Great Eastern!

ESP Ann Neo Poh Leng (Dir Randal Leau GEW)- 杰出业务银龙奖 (Silver Dragon)- Veteran

Receiving my first International Dragon Award in 2014 was an incredible and unforgettable experience. While the initial thrill has subsided, the sustained recognition from the subsequent nine awards provided a deeper sense of accomplishment and affirmed my dedication to industry excellence.

To succeed in the insurance business, one must learn from the process of rejection. How to handle customer refusals is an essential lesson. Only by overcoming the challenge of rejection can one establish the prerequisites for professional survival and become the most competitive insurance practitioner. Customers are actually not rejecting insurance; they are rejecting our communication approach. It’s about finding the right way to communicate with customers.

Hail, Dragons of Great Eastern!

SFC Eugene Lee Jin Keng (Dir Keith Ng GEE)- 杰出业务铜龙奖 (Bronze Dragon)- first time qualifier

As a first-time MDRT and IDA qualifier who joined the industry in Dec 2021, achieving MDRT was tough, but IDA was really unlocking a milestone. I am thankful to be there as it is the first such conference, post pandemic.

Having a like-minded community is very important. The growth mindset of the attendees instilled good vibes and was so contagious! Everyone retained the hunger to learn despite being so established. It really broadened my mind and helped me see what is out there in the global Chinese insurance market. I appreciate the opportunity to meet the best in our industry and the invaluable. guidance received for self-development.

Hail, Dragons of Great Eastern!

SMR Lee Xuan Hui Anna (Dir Elsie Chua GEH)- 杰出业务铜龙奖 (Bronze Dragon)- Veteran

This is my 5th year qualifying for IDA. I’m glad that I can submit this report card to my clients and friends who have trusted me from the start to let them know that they are in good hands. This is also a recognition of the effort and hard work I put in.

The most memorable takeaway from IDA in Taipei was the energy and motivation I got from all the speakers. They were amazing. My tip to aspiring attendees: Don't give up, Keep going! Failure only happens when you cease to make an effort.

Hail, Dragons of Great Eastern!

SFC Javis Tan Wei Bin (Dir Timothy Tan GEC)- 杰出业务铜龙奖 (Bronze Dragon)- first time qualifier

Applause could be heard reverberating through the walls of the 5,000 square feet convention centre. Participants thronged the halls, all ready to absorb the unfettered sharing by industry giants. I saw a brand new horizon from an international perspective and it was life changing. I finally understood that the mountain peak I have reached merely provides a glimpse of the foothill of an even taller mountain.

I understand now that my own limit is set by myself. Being consistent and able to operate in tough times are the epitome to success. Taking a step back to reflect periodically will also propel your career forward in an unimaginable way.

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

It was a most wonderful way possible to spend Sunday morning: in the good company of friends, families and folks who shared a passion for health and wellness. We know many of you were among the 9,000+ ladies who rose bright and early for the Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023. Starting at Nicoll Highway, beside the iconic Singapore Sports Hub, participants were treated to a scenic run through some of Singapore’s most picturesque landscapes.

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes
Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

Thank you for making our 17th edition so memorable. We were thrilled to see everyone again, including Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment who gamely participated in the 5km category!

As our event Guest of Honour Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law put it, “The Great Eastern Women’s Run holds a unique place in our local sporting calendar as Singapore’s only all-women's race – championing the unity of women in health, wellness, community and friendship. It is an excellent testament to the power of sport in bringing people together, advocating healthy living, and making a positive impact on our wider community.”

Indeed, we continue to uplift communities through the race, with our hardworking Great Eastern’s Financial Representatives and employees raising $260,000 for beneficiary organisations, Daughters Of Tomorrow and Singapore Cancer Society. This will be channelled towards programmes that support underprivileged women in their back-to-work journeys and help cancer survivors to integrate into everyday life.

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

Shoutout to our top fundraisers - Team JKLA (Financial Reps), Team Fabulous4 (staff), Ms Mary Tan (Financial Rep), and Ms Diane Tay (staff)! A huge thank you to all our fundraisers and to everyone who supported our conviction to help our community #ReachforGreat!

Team JKLA, our top fundraising team, raised $52,000 – that’s an amazing 20% of the nett total raised! We caught Team JKLA on race day – three members instead of four as one member was overseas - and here’s what they shared:

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

1. As the reigning champion fundraiser for the last three years, were there expectations to retain your title as the top fundraiser?

The 2023 fund raising effort was the most challenging we had so far.

Firstly, we had a target to increase the amount raised by 20% compared to what we did in 2022 (which was approx. 40K+). We do this because we want to do more for our beneficiaries.

Secondly, doing good through corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become more habitual for most people and this is a great development. Yet this also means many of the donors are already actively contributing to other CSR efforts outside of Great Eastern Women’s Run.

To encourage more new reps to take part in this worthy cause, we invited two new members into JKLA who is participating in the Fundraising Challenge for the first time!

(Note: JKLA stands for the team members’ initials. Kristiana Anthon and Lydia Lee were in the same fundraising team for the past three years. In 2022, they were known as JKLM with Joanne See and Marie Mak. In 2023, they are known as JKLA with Janice Zhang and Annie See.)

2. What were your thoughts when you first signed up for this and how did you feel when the fundraising period closed?

It was a bitter sweet moment: bitter because that marked the end of what we could raise for this year; sweet because we know we have fought a good fight and finished the race well!

3. Any parting words that JKLA would like to share with the Fin Rep community about doing good/fundraising etc

Do right! Do good! And you shall do well!

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2023: Great race for greater causes

As the game-changing race for generations of women, we will continue to create the space and stage for women of all ages and ambition to be the greatest version of themselves. Thank you again to all Fin Reps who have supported, made donations and contributed to the success of the race in one way or other. See you again for the next race!

Q4 2023 Market Outlook – A Summary from Products & Propositions (Funds)

Central banks are likely nearing the end of their monetary tightening cycles. At this juncture, the global economic slowdown is deemed manageable and even necessary for inflation to converge at acceptable levels, with expectations that it will persist into 2024. The US economy continues to exhibit robust growth, while Europe grapples with challenges. In contrast, China is in the midst of a secular slowdown. Emerging market (EM) economies are also under restrictive financial conditions, likely prompting their central banks to reduce policy rates. The base-case scenario is a gradual global economic slowdown alongside easing inflation. Potential risks originate from geopolitical tensions and potential delayed effects of tight monetary policies. Investors should maintain a degree of optimism for the rest of the year but also remain vigilant, as unforeseen events could reshape the landscape.

This quarter, we maintain a 'neutral' stance on global equities due to ongoing economic uncertainty and valuation concerns, despite short-term market strength. While central banks are tightening policies, we do not anticipate a global recession over the next few months. Our 'positive' stance on global bonds continues as developed market central banks near the end of their rate hike cycles, offering long-term return potential with higher yields. We prefer investment-grade to high-yield credits due to stronger fundamentals in the former.

It was hot in the classrooms! And it was hard work! But that did not stop close to 40 Great Eastern Financial Representatives and employees from volunteering to be part of the financial literacy movement to empower youths in money matters. They facilitated a two-day programme conducted in partnership with JA Singapore for two schools reaching out to almost 600 students who learnt about spending within budget, saving and investing wisely and using credit cautiously.

Making Bettr better through CPF

Bettr Academy
Bettr Academy

We also held a customised fireside chat focusing on how to use and optimise CPF for Housing, Healthcare and Retirement to the alumni and employees of Bettr Academy, a leading social enterprise operating a specialty coffee and beverage business in Singapore. The engaging session was led by Director Regina Chia and supported by Senior Financial Consultant Jasmine Chee.

Incidentally, both Regina and Jasmine were also volunteers for our Fin Lit mentorship programme in one of the schools. Find out more about why and how they continue to volunteer during the peak season that’s Final Sprint.

Bettr Academy
Bettr Academy

1. Please describe what you did as a volunteer for Bettr Academy and the youth mentoring in school

During our voluntary engagement at Bettr Academy, we delved into the intricacies of the Central Provident Fund (CPF) and its operational mechanisms, providing a comprehensive understanding of its services and uses. Subsequently, at the school, we participated in an immersive, activity-oriented programme centered around personal finance and career planning, ensuring a hands-on and engaging learning experience for the students.

2. What prompted you to sign up for this despite a packed schedule and it’s the final sprint season?

Doing good is a consistent and regular effort, regardless of Final Sprint. Our motivation stems from a deep-seated commitment to giving back to society as well as the conviction that these are causes worth making time for. Financial literacy volunteerism aligns seamlessly with the ethos of our day-to-day work as insurance agents, yet it signifies a heightened dedication to extend this valuable information to a broader audience, particularly those who may have limited exposure to such critical topics.

We are impassioned about equipping students with the necessary tools and insights, ensuring they have ample time to learn and grow, and the space to make and learn from their mistakes. It's disheartening to witness many adults struggle to navigate financial transitions due to a lack of foundational knowledge. Fostering financial awareness now will yield a more financially astute and empowered society in the future.

3. What do you suggest for future volunteering events and why?

Considering the challenges in attracting volunteers due to limited recognition, social media restrictions, and the need for visibility, it's imperative to augment the appeal of future volunteering events. Relying on the feel-good factor needs to be partnered with shedding more light onto these works that we do and providing further acknowledgement to enhance participation.

Editor: We know! Which is why we are recognising Regina and Jasmine for their efforts to spread the good and the love! And we feature as much as possible the social good done by our Fin Reps and agencies. Please keep up the GREAT work!

Office of Philip Loh: Creating a ripple of goodness

Office of Philip Loh

On 27 Sep 2023, Director Philip Loh, a financial planning veteran with over two decades of experience showed that success is not only measured by financial milestones but by the impact we create in the lives of others. Philip donated $160,000 to Boys’ Town, a charity that enables young boys and girls coming from disadvantaged families with the skills and mind set to become socially integrated, responsible and contributing members of society.

Philip believes that it is one’s privilege and responsibility to uplift communities when one is successful. Youngster today are often struggling to find their identities, especially in an environment that challenges their self-worth and purpose.

In addition to Boys’ Town, Philip has been making yearly donations to other organisations such as Jamidiyah Singapore, Caritas Singapore, and others since 2010.
