Reach for Great with Great Eastern
Reach for Great with Great Eastern

You’ve heard it all at the 25 August Town Hall! Great Eastern has unveiled our brand promise - to help our customers achieve their aspirations. How? By doing what we do best, protecting them against life’s uncertainties and empowering their financial freedom through delightful experiences with us.

From a brand standpoint, we have evolved from helping consumers to Live Lifeproof as brand research with consumers across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia has revealed that customers look to us beyond health pursuits; to being the ally on their journey to achieving goals and aspirations in all their varied forms.

Our refreshed promise to our customers draws upon three key concepts of Great Eastern’s Expertise, Heritage and Inspiration. With this positioning, we embrace a more multi-dimensional view where we believe that Great comes in every form, and that Great is for everyone, regardless of their aspirations, life-stage or socio-economic status. We hope to empower everyone to Reach for Great.

Our refreshed tagline comes at an appropriate time as we celebrate our 114th anniversary. We as a brand are now, more than ever, closely connected to our customers.

The message: Great Eastern is the insurer that will be steadily present – as we have been the last 114 years – ever ready to take away their financial worries, and to support them as they achieve their goals.

The tagline was developed as a result of extensive research involving more than 2,000 consumers across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia done over the last two years.

A key consumer insight which surfaced was a fresh wave of optimism from consumers emerging from the pandemic, realising the importance of, and valuing an insurance partner that truly understands their needs and ambitions, who is able to provide tailored advisory and solutions to enable their financial aspirations.

A Reach for Great Contest was also launched to garner the personal goals and aspirations of staff and financial representatives. These inspiring submissions are then broadcast in a campaign Instagram and across a giant LED at GEC atrium. All the submissions will be assessed by a senior panel and the top 4 most inspiring ones will each be awarded up to $5,000 to help them achieve their goals. This activity helps to increase engagement with the staff, and more importantly, bring to life the new brand positioning in a tangible and visual manner.

New Visual Identity & Campaign

To signal this new brand positioning of Reach for Great to our customers, we commissioned the development of a new visual identity which will be visible in our marketing materials across the region.

A distinctive new headline typeface, colour strategy and illustration style takes reference from our first brand logo in the 1900s, and the new visuals sport a heritage crest to reflect our establishment as an inspiring and trusted insurance brand.

There’s also a brand film featuring consumer profiles across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in pursuit of their own “Greatness” in real life has been developed. The series of 9 films showcases the diversity of goals and aspirations and how Great Eastern inspires this because we believe “Great is for everyone”. These people stories came from across the region to authentically capture thoughts of words of real people from all walks and in all stages of life.

Catch our new brand campaign island wide via free-to-air television, digital and social media, website and out-of-home advertising.

Share this story with your colleagues and watch the brand film. To find out more, click here: https://www.greateasternlife.com/sg/en/about-us.html.

Real Talk with Zhao Jingyuan, Group Chief Data Officer
Real talk with Zhao Jingyuan, Group Chief Data Officer

1.     How long have you joined the Great Eastern family and what are your key goals as Group Chief Data Officer?

September will be my 3rd month of joining the Great Eastern family.

As the Group Chief Data Officer, I am responsible for the:

  • Development and delivery of Great Eastern’s Data;
  • Strategic roadmap on Analytics & AI;
  • Operationalisation of Data, Analytics & AI initiatives to bring business impact;
  • Modernisation of enterprise Data and AI platform for agility in data activation;
  • Data governance & management to build users’ trust in data and enable self-service capabilities;
  • Empowering employee by providing easy-to-understand data to provide faster business insights for better decision making; and
  • Establishing Data & AI ethics guidelines and standards

2.     What inspired you to start a career in Data?

When I was conducting research work on my PhD topic (high dimensional model selection and its application in human genetics), I witnessed the power of data and its potential application on theories and knowledge to solve real-life challenges.

Although I have experienced many failed data experiments and research, it gives me courage and confidence as I am just a step closer towards success, and my interest in data got stronger and I want to learn and explore more. The rapid advancement of Data & AI amazes me and keeps me energised.

3.     What do you think is the next big trend in Data that we at Great Eastern should pay attention to?

At Great Eastern, we will start working on building a data ecosystem and share data at scale and with trust. It will help Great Eastern derive competitive advantage and create new value as an insurer.

To start building our data ecosystem, we need to define a strong and clear data sharing strategy and roadmap, kick off implementation from small scale, and sustain the advantage by scaling up the use cases.

4.     For you, the most important quality in a leader is...

A leader needs to create a clear and inspiring vision, and mobilise the team and motivate people towards achieving the vision. A leader needs to build the trust, support the team through tough times, and help them meet both company and individual goals.

In addition, a leader should help raise the bar by challenging people’s limiting beliefs, encourage continuous learning, and create a culture of ownership.

5.     What do you like to do outside of work, and how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

In my free time, I read to keep pace with top data and AI technology trends. I will also spend 30 minutes on yoga every day to keep myself focused and energised.

I also enjoy my time picking up gardening skills with my 15-year-old boy, Joshua.

Building a “We over Me” culture: Leadership Huddle 2022
Building a "We over Me" culture: Leadership Huddle 2022

At Great Eastern, we value regular and insightful engagements with our people.

Starting first with the leadership team, Human Capital has been planning and facilitating a steady stream of sessions for the company’s senior leadership team, heads of departments and people managers as part of our initiative to influence culture, enhance inter-division collaboration through trust and team resilience and unlock human potential as we navigate the new future of work together.

Over two Leadership Huddle sessions held in May and earlier this September, our Great Eastern senior leadership team gathered to discuss, align and bring back best practices on changing the organisational culture for the better through a strong culture of trust, safety and collaboration in the workplace.

Filled with meaningful interactions and lively discussions, the sessions focused on how an impactful leadership will enable employees to grow while nurturing the practice of our Great Eastern core values as well as generic skills and competencies (GSCs) as we strive to deliver operational excellence, business outcomes and value for our customers – Together as One.

Over 1,200 employees from Great Eastern Life Malaysia, Great Eastern General Malaysia and Great Eastern Takaful Berhad came together to celebrate the Group’s 114th anniversary on 26 August – the first physical event since 2020.

Happy faces of participating staff were seen at the bi-annual townhall session as it transformed the Menara Great Eastern office into a themed carnival with live performances, lucky draw and game booths.

This year we welcomed Group CEO Khor Hock Seng, and the Managing Director of Group Marketing, Colin Chan, in a special appearance via Microsoft Teams to announce the Group’s new brand refresh exercise.

CEO Dato’ Koh Yaw Hui shared with all employees Great Eastern Life Malaysia’s 1H FY2022 performance. Other senior management updates included a special video showcasing the company’s ESG initiatives by Head of Risk Management Teo Chun Seng, where he shared the ways to achieve operational net zero by 2025. Office transformation projects such as switching out all air conditioning modules into inverters, and organising various recycling and sustainability campaigns within the company, will be soon rolled out. Among other initiatives to address the social and governance aspect of ESG included various programmes for the B40 group, the bottom 40% of income earner in Malaysia.

Head of Digital Transformation Lo Chin Loon also introduced how the company was keeping up with the ever-changing digital landscape, to keep all staff informed of the company’s latest developments such as the launching of GreatPlanner to increase efficiency and productivity for sales and monitoring performance, as well as paperless claims to improve accessibility and customer experience with Great Eastern.

What’s a carnival without snacks and drinks? All staff were treated to free-flow popcorn and cotton candy, Baskin Robbins ice cream, and even a Boost juice stall for freshly blended juice!

The company also took the opportunity to spread the word on sustainability by providing canvas tote bags as door gifts to encourage reuseable bags to replace plastic bags. To ensure minimal food wastage, staff were also given lunch coupons to be redeemed in a food court for lunch of their own choice, at their own time.

With physical event returning for the first time, the 2022 Anniversary Townhall was a refreshing event for all staff in Malaysia to mark our first step to Reach for Great!

Reach-ing for Great through fun and games to celebrate GELI’s 26th anniversary
Reach-ing for Great through fun and games to celebrate GELI’s 26th anniversary

GELI employees were empowered to #ReachforGreat with a focus on leading a healthy lifestyle – all to launch our latest brand refresh and to celebrate GELI’s 26th anniversary with a big bang.

In the run-up to the launch-cum-celebrations, GELI staff were invited to Reach for Great Health.

Great Run, a virtual contest, saw the participation of 106 employees from 16 July to 14 August. The total running target for each employee was 16 km, of which 87 employees managed to achieve the target. 71 out of the 87 employees even reached the extra mile of 26 km.

Employees were also invited to do a Great Ride – virtually but no less gruelling, as participants must hit a total ride target of 100 km. Of the 24 employees who took part in this activity, 11 employees succeeded in achieving the target, while 9 out of the 11 employees managed to reach the extra mile of 168 km!

For non-runners and non-cyclists, there were also Great Games in store to challenge them to form teams in a gaming competition. There were 22 employees gathered after work hours for 5 consecutive days from 8 to 12 August 2022 to play Mobile Legends – a mobile multiplayer online battle games. This match uses a tournament system where the top 3 winners emerged after a week-long challenge.

It’s time to Reach for Great in Sustainability

GELI also took the opportunity to turn employees’ attention to Sustainability as part of the anniversary celebrations. During its hybrid 26th Anniversary Town Hall - onsite at Menara Kadin and online via Teams - GELI employees were pleasantly surprised to receive a personalised gift of bamboo mug with their names engraved – to encourage them to BYO mugs for beverages, as part of the company’s sustainability effort.

Last but not least, following the local traditional symbol of gratitude for a GREAT year just past, prayers were made for GELI, followed by the cutting and sharing of a “Tumpeng” (Traditional Javanese Rice Cone Dish).

Contributing to a greener and sustainable Singapore

"He who plants a tree, plants a hope."

Together as one, our colleagues in Singapore planted 70 trees on 15 August, in support of NPark's OneMillion Trees Movement.

It was an afternoon of sweat and laughter for 60 colleagues across various divisions - including RAFABA, Group IT, Group Finance, Group Human Capital - who came together at Jalan Kilang Barat (near Alexandra Industrial Estate along the Rail Corridor), armed with spades to pot new saplings specially selected to suit the natural environment in the vicinity.

Planting of trees is essential to mitigate heat in the area and contribute to a more pleasant and sustainable environment. With the aim of restoring nature back into the city by planting more than a million trees across Singapore in the next 10 years, the national tree-planting movement resonates with Great Eastern's sustainability focus.

With a total of $328,744 raised through generous contributions from our employees and financial representatives in 2021, there will be 1,429 trees planted by us around Singapore, including 30 trees at Great Eastern Centre.

Kudos to the colleagues who persevered and pressed on through the heat, planting hopes for a greener and sustainable Singapore!

The webinar was highly interactive, with the young undergraduates actively posing questions about insurance and digital insurance trends and practices in Indonesia.

GEGI expands business connections at Surabaya Travel Fair
GEGI expands business connections at Surabaya Travel Fair

As the pandemic eases and border restrictions are lifted, GEGI is tapping on this opportunity to provide travel protection to the increased number of travellers from Surabaya.

From 1 to 4 September, GEGI participated at the Travel Fair held at Ciputra World Mall, Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia. GEGI was the sole insurance company sponsor that provided travel insurance protection for each ticket sold at the Travel Fair.  Each ticket was bundled with basic travel insurance, and those who would like to upgrade the protection were able to do so.

A collaboration between the Association of Indonesian Airline Ticket sellers (ASTINDO) and Bank OCBC NISP, the Travel Fair was an excellent platform for GEGI to raise our brand awareness to the wider community in Surabaya. Through the sponsorship, GEGI established contacts with all the participating travel agencies and local air tickets sellers – a move closer to reaching out to a wider customer base in Surabaya.

Late payments decrease by 24.4% after process improvement
1029077200

The year-long collaborative effort between the teams from Experience Design and Data (EDxD), Group Operations and Digital for Business (DxB) has paid off.

In June 2021, the working team looked into feedback Great Eastern received regarding premium payments, such as insufficient information being communicated to our customers, and the not-so-user-friendly payment process as some commented.

Within a month in July 2021, the solutions had started to be rolled out progressively. The results?

  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • More efficient operational costs
  • Fewer lapsed policies as a result of the reduction of late or missed payments

Through the system enhancement, the team also found that customers preferred credit card payments versus using cash or cheque.

Best of all – based on initial data, compared to last year, the average number of late payments (year to date) has fallen by 24.4%. The working team is still introducing more solutions to #ReachforGreat in business outcomes.

Kudos to the team and power on as we seek continuous improvements in the way we live and work.
