Reduce, reuse, recycle – It’s a team effort

Red Packet Recycling Programme

This Chinese New Year, we stayed focused on our sustainability commitment and contributed to the reduction of our carbon footprint through the Red Packet Recycling Programme. As we encouraged our colleagues to #ReachforGreat and combat climate change by dropping off their used or unused red packets, we collected 486kg of red packets from offices in Singapore and Malaysia.

Congratulations to Group Strategy, Group Investment Management and Group Human Capital for being the winners of the Red Packet Recycling Campaign!

Great Eastern Takaful engages the community

In the previous issue of TGT, we had a story about GETB’s commitment to implement Value Based Intermediation Takaful (VBIT) through community empowerment.

Ushering in the New Year, GETB has kickstarted a series of community engagement activities to raise environmental awareness. One such activity is an environmental talk and hands-on workshop for 100 secondary school students from SMK Lembah Subang to produce upcycled items and plastic pouches from different types of plastic waste.

During the session on 26 January, the students were presented with alarming facts about plastic pollution in the sea and the harm it brings to sea creatures – harm which eventually finds its way into our food chain. The students were then taught ways to combat the concerning issue in their everyday lives. The interactive session also sparked interest among educators leading the group of students on the importance of protecting the environment.

GETB was also invited to set up an upcycling booth at GREAT Friday Sales, organised by GELM to help educate employees on the initiative. Over 200 employees visited the booth for a first-hand experience of operating the 2-in-1 upcycling machine launched late last year.

GET-UP Battle: GETB’s UPcycling campaign

In addition to the community engagement, GETB also organised a company-wide upcycling competition called GET-UP Battle in its quest to encourage all employees to make the right choice in managing plastic usage and waste. More employees were trained to operate the 2-in-1 upcycling machine and produce new upcycled items such as rulers, combs and bag clips.

This month-long competition aimed to cultivate a culture amongst employees to give back to the community through a common environmental goal whereby all upcycled items will be distributed to the public during the environmental awareness programme throughout the year.

GETB enters Malaysia Book of Records

GETB sets new Malaysia Book of Record

Great Eastern Takaful made its way into the Malaysia Book of Records by building the country’s largest turtle sand sculpture in Cherating, Pahang, in conjunction with its Agency Headstart 2023 event held in January. The sand sculpture measured 8.8 meters long and 6.4 meters wide and was built to raise awareness about environmental crisis and plastic pollution endangering various species of marine life.

Around 1,200 of our Takaful advisors participated in this record-breaking initiative, strengthening their commitment to do good for the community while providing best-in-class service to protect over 1.5 million Malaysians.

Chief Executive Officer of GETB, Shahrul Azlan Shahriman, said, "As a family Takaful operator that is very concerned about this intensifying marine life issue, we stepped forward with extraordinary action to draw the attention of our agency force to plastic pollution. Reports related to marine life being seriously impacted by plastics are not new. The problem has been going on for a long time to the point that marine animals now face the risk of extinction. With the collective effort of all of our agency force, supported by more Malaysians, we believe that we can Reach for Great together."

As part of the initiative, our agency force was also offered the chance to experience the joy of upcycling while being briefed on plastic waste management measures.

Reach for a Greener Tomorrow campaign updates

Reach for a Greener Tomorrow campaign updates

To commemorate National Waste Awareness Day, Great Eastern Life Indonesia (GELI) and Saya Pilih Bumi – part of National Geographic Indonesia – held a talk show themed "Reach for a Greener Tomorrow: Collaboration to Realise a Zero Waste Lifestyle for the Earth" at Salihara Art Center, South Jakarta.

Speakers invited were Ramon Y. Tungka, actor; Siska Nirmala, initiator of the Zero Waste Expedition Movement; and Roy Hendrata Gozalie, Head of Marketing, GELI.

During the discussion, the speakers encouraged individuals, the community and organisations to all play their own roles in implementing a zero-waste culture in their daily lives and business activities. For example, GELI is now adopting digital forms and distributing reusable merchandise at its roadshows.

To help Indonesians implement a zero-waste lifestyle consistently, GELI and Saya Pilih Bumi will also distribute 5,000 eco-friendly shopping bags to members of the public through 21 community partners.

The Reach for a Greener Tomorrow campaign is part of our Group-wide sustainability efforts. More activities will be rolled out in the coming months – do watch this space for updates!

Real Talk with Gary Teh, MD, Group IT

Real Talk with Gary Teh, MD, Group IT

1. Tell us more about your role as Managing Director of Group IT, and the plans ahead to strengthen Great Eastern’s digital capabilities?

My role is to ensure that we (Group IT):
(1) deliver the technology outcomes (be it digital, data, system) that enable the goals of the business;
(2) secure the availability and resiliency of our IT systems and infrastructure; and
(3) continue to futureproof our technology.

In terms of strengthening our digital capabilities, our focus will be to:
(1) improve the feature richness and system performance of our digital assets to drive increased adoption;
(2) accelerate the adoption of DevOps1 to increase the speed of rolling out new releases/enhancements; and
(3) further strengthen security to protect Great Eastern from the ever-advancing cyber threats.

1 DevOps is application lifecycle automation. DevOps reduces time and effort on manual tasks to compile and deploy codes to production, enabling an organisation to deliver production updates faster.

2. As we all know, digital transformation is an ongoing effort. What’s at the top of your mind at this point in time?

Cloud transformation. There will come a time when all things will run on Cloud and we must be ready. At Great Eastern, we are doing this in a purposeful way without compromising on security. We started by building our own Private Cloud so that we can start running our new initiatives on a cloud-ready platform whilst retaining our data internally. Today, we have started migrating our existing applications onto our Private Cloud. By the end of this year, we expect at least 70% of all Great Eastern’s compute resource to run on our Private Cloud. This puts us in a very good place as everything that we have in our Private Cloud can be switched over to the Public Cloud whenever we see that the timing is right.

3. How do you think our employees can play a part in our digital transformation journey?

I think it begins with understanding or accepting the importance of digital transformation and wanting to be part of the journey.

Unlike other industries - e.g. manufacturing, F&B - we cannot use finer raw materials/ingredients to make our product better. What we sell is a promise that we will be there when our customers need help. To deliver on this promise, we need to count on our most important asset - our people - to be at the forefront providing best-in-class service. In our changing world, the customer expects this service level to transcend physical boundaries. Hence, there is an urgent need for us to embark on digital transformation not just to meet the expectations of our customers, but also as a tool to further differentiate ourselves. To succeed, we need everyone to come along on this journey.

Everyone can play a crucial part by embracing the new way of work and the new technology, and also by taking time to participate in learning. Most importantly, be open to provide constructive feedback to further improve the digital experience/automation as there will be humps in the beginning. This is when your support matters.

4. What do you like to do in your free time (outside of work)?

I like to go for a run/walk to enjoy nature and explore new places. Cycling is my newfound passion. It allows me to go further and explore more.

5. What keeps you going/inspires you?

Ability to work with team and inspire their careers. Nothing gets me going more than the satisfaction I get from being able to empower, share knowledge and help the team succeed. Be it encouraging a co-worker to adapt to a change, removing impediments for the team, changing the status quo … everything excites me.

6. A good leader is……

Someone who is both resolute and flexible, i.e. not only persistent in the face of setback but also able to react strategically to change. To think strategically, a leader must always remember to “get on the balcony”. Whilst it is important to stay connected to the action on the ground, it is essential to step out of the fray and finding the balcony perspective to gain a clearer view of reality in the midst of a challenging situation.

Great Eastern Singapore held its first on-site Staff Townhall of the year on 10 March. The session was livestreamed from Great Eastern Centre to our Changi office, allowing colleagues across both offices to join the townhall. About 500 colleagues attended the session on-site to hear the latest company updates and strategies for 2023 from our speakers: GCEO, Colin Chan, Winnie Tan and James Lee.

Group CEO Khor Hock Seng kicked off the session with a recap of the Group Financial Performance for FY 2022 vs FY 2021 and called on all employees to do our part to work towards achieving the goals set for 2023 despite the challenging and uncertain business environment. He went on to share about the key strategic focus for the group in 2023 and emphasised that we must 1) Get Real; 2) Be Prepared and 3) Stay United in order to achieve our goals.

Colin Chan, MD of Group Marketing, provided campaign updates from our Reach for Great brand refresh exercise last August, and how cross-divisional collaboration had resulted in improved customer experience with Great Eastern. He also gave key product updates, including enhancements to our Shield product proposition.

To improve our customers’ claims experience with the company, various divisions including Group Operations, Group Insurance, Digital for Business, Group Data and Group Marketing came together to redesign the customer journey, with the end goal of ensuring a delightful experience for our customers so that they can focus on their aspirations and goals to Reach for Great. This is a testament to how we are delivering on our new brand positioning through the operationalising of our Brand Drivers, he said.

Colin added that our annual Great Eastern Women’s Run would be held on 29 October at the Singapore Sports Hub. All staff are strongly encouraged to join the Reach for Great Fundraising Challenge to support this meaningful cause. Funds raised will be split equally between the two adopted beneficiaries – Daughters Of Tomorrow and Singapore Cancer Society – through Community Chest.

Next, Winnie Tan, SVP of Sustainability, shared the company’s sustainability ambition and how we would be achieving this moving forward. At Great Eastern, we are committed to protect, preserve and grow what matters to our customers and communities. To ensure a sustainable future, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and ready to respond to the evolving demands and business landscape. With the set-up of the GMC taskforce to focus on four key sustainability priorities, the taskforce leaders will continue to work with the various divisions to map out and deliver the taskforce strategy and work plan.

Finally, James Lee, MD of Group Human Capital, wrapped up the first townhall of the year by reiterating how building our corporate culture would empower our staff to deliver their best every day.

James also shared the good news of increased staff satisfaction, as shown by the results of the Culture & Engagement Survey completed in 2022. As we move forward in 2023, we will continue to fine tune the programmes and initiatives to better support our staff to Reach for Great.

LIFE Programme celebrates “The Perfect 10”

The LIFE Programme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year! Since 2013, the LIFE Programme has been a key flagship programme at Great Eastern in empowering our colleagues to take charge of their personal well-being.

Over the years, the programme has pivoted from physical well-being to encompass a more holistic approach towards total well-being, covering Physical Health, Mental Health, Financial Health and Social Well-Being. In celebration of this significant milestone, we will be rolling out “The Perfect 10” this year – 10 special activities to commemorate 10 years of Moving Together as One in shaping wellness in our organisation.

Bounce Fitness

We kick-started the celebration with a Bounce Fitness Session, right at our own office premises. Our colleagues had a blast working out together and engaging in this fun fitness routine session.

#IamRemarkable Workshop

The next ”Perfect 10” session was held in March and facilitated by our very own team from RAFABA, Centre For Excellence. The #IamRemarkable session is a Google initiative empowering individuals to speak openly about their accomplishments in the workplace and beyond, thereby breaking modesty norms and glass ceilings.

Through the interactive session, our colleagues learnt the importance of self-promotion in both personal and corporate settings and were equipped with tools to further develop this skill. It was also heart-warming to see our colleagues encouraging and supporting each other to step out of their comfort zone to share their achievements and take the first step to become a more remarkable version of themselves.

Stay tuned as we roll out the rest of “The Perfect 10” activities in the next few months!

Group-wide meet-up

As a member of the OCBC Group, our Great Eastern team spearheaded a Group-wide meet-up for around 80 user experience (UX) designers, design researchers, content designers and creative technologists across OCBC, Bank of Singapore and Great Eastern to promote knowledge sharing and greater Group-wide collaboration.

The meet-up sessions held in August and December 2022 had seen good progress. For instance, we are now getting help from OCBC peers to set up our UX test lab. We are also engaged in two-way sharing with OCBC for the design of the online insurance purchase experience. In addition, we have been improving different aspects of our design operations by understanding how our peers execute it.

At the most recent session in December, we went around in groups to participate in various topics of interest. The five topics included content design, career progression, influencing design, team culture and design excellence. Called ‘Design World Café’, the meet-up held at the Changi office saw the attendance of design team leaders, including BOS Chief Experience Officer Chooake Wongwattanasilpa and OCBC Head of Interaction Design Samuel Poh.

Before we ended the day, we voted for discussion topics we wanted to continue online before our next meet-up in April 2023, which will be hosted by OCBC.

Digital Experience Measurements workshop

DxB organised a workshop on 20 February to share best practices for Digital Experience Measurements, an essential practice we established to raise our bar on customer-centricity while aligning our digital initiatives to our Reach for Great brand drivers. We took a hard look at our customers’ expectations for our digital services and ways to design our digital tools to find out accurately if their expectations are being met. Through the workshop, colleagues in DxB strengthened our shared language in measurements, and we are now making the measurement framework a part of our design and continuous improvement processes.
