Flocking together! For good

Flocking together! For good

Birds fly high, hard to catch
Friends like you, hard to forget!

This popular ‘poem’ found in autograph books of yore used to be the ultimate friendship declaration in Singapore. It certainly expresses the sentiments of our 19 Great Eastern employee volunteers during the recent befriending outing to Bird Paradise with 45 Singapore Cancer Society beneficiaries and their families.

Our volunteers were fully focused on bringing joy to our new friends and creating memories that they can look back fondly on. This means assuming multiple roles, including that of an affable companion to listen and cheer them on, an obliging photographer to record the fun and funny moments, a dedicated waiter taking and serving their food orders and a jovial porter to help them with their belongings!

We thank our new friends for an awesome day together. Our hearts are full from this encounter.

Our employees and Financial Representatives have also been raising funds for the Singapore Cancer Society through the Great Eastern Women’s Run. This outing is part of our corporate efforts to contribute more meaningfully and holistically, by creating opportunities for volunteers to befriend and interact with communities whom we have been supporting.

If you would like to support our cause and be that ray of sunshine to brighten lives, your generous donations are much appreciated here: https://lnkd.in/gizynusc. This fundraiser ends 30 September, so please make your contributions sooner than later!

Let’s Recycle Together: a meaningful initiative

Let’s Recycle Together: a meaningful initiative

As part of our journey towards a more sustainable future, GELS joined hands with Zero Waste SG to encourage the elderly in Singapore to embrace recycling and educate them about its importance. Zero Waste SG is a local charity and NGO dedicated to promoting a zero-waste lifestyle in Singapore.

This initiative, Let’s Recycle Together, took place on 20 September 2023 at the HDB estate of Mei Ling Street, home to many seniors.

40 employees in Singapore participated in this initiative. They were paired with a buddy and then grouped into teams to cover different blocks. They collected recyclables like clean plastic, glass, metal items, and paper. However, their role didn’t stop at collection – they also took time to educate the elderly residents about why recycling matters and what items should be set aside for recycling instead of being thrown away.

The remarkable impact

Volunteers’ efforts resulted in a remarkable 140.53kg of recyclable materials collected. This included 65kg of paper, 46.84kg of plastic, 24.83kg of glass and 4.11kg of metal. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.

A heart-warming experience

All volunteers put their best foot forward, eager to make a difference. They not only contributed to the environment but also had the rare opportunity to connect with the elderly. They were patient and warm towards volunteers who went knocking on doors to collect recyclables and conduct a survey.

Volunteers were inspired by the enthusiasm of the senior citizens towards recycling. For instance, many residents had diligently cleaned and dried their plastic containers, glass bottles, cans, and set them aside for recycling. Witnessing this commitment was inspiring and heartening.

The most significant part of this initiative was the genuine connection formed between volunteers and the elderly residents. It was a humbling experience showing that when we come together for a common cause, our differences fade away leaving behind a shared commitment to a better future.

As we reflect on this incredible journey, it inspires us to continue our efforts in making a difference, one recycling bin at a time.

Planting a greener tomorrow

Planting a greener tomorrow

On 19 September 2023, 140 employees from the RAFABA team at GELS embarked on a journey of transformation. With shovels in their hand, they set out to plant the seeds of change, quite literally.

The initiative marked a significant milestone as it was the first time that the RAFABA team ventured into the world of tree planting. The excitement and enthusiasm were evident as the volunteers gathered to make a real difference.

This exercise might sound physically demanding but it was indeed fulfilling. Volunteers dug into the ground and planted one-to-two-year-old young trees. Within a few hours, they planted 50 Neolitsea Cassia trees along both sides of Cassia Link road. Their collective efforts were not about just planting trees but also nurturing a greener future for Singapore.

Planting a greener tomorrow
Planting a greener tomorrow

This initiative was part of Great Eastern’s commitment to the OneMillionTrees movement, a vision to restore greenery in our city. Over the next ten years, this movement seeks to plant more trees across Singapore. It aligns perfectly with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030.

What truly makes this achievement stand out is the sense of community it fostered. By digging into the earth volunteers were not just planting trees but also deepening their roots in the community. Planting trees isn’t just about adding greenery to our surroundings but enhancing our resilience in the face of climate change.

The National Parks Board of Singapore was appreciative of our employees’ heartfelt efforts. It's a testament to the impact we can have when we unite for a common goal.

This initiative reflects the spirit of Great Eastern in nurturing a sustainable future for generations to come. Together, the RAFABA volunteers have shown that every tree planted today is a step closer to a brighter and greener tomorrow.

Volunteers step forward to protect the environment and give back to communities in Malaysia

Teams from different entities in Great Eastern Malaysia joined hands to support the community in improving the quality of life as well as protecting the environment, supporting two among four important pillars in the Great Eastern Cares programme. Volunteering activities were organised for employees to contribute their time and effort, as well as to grow in empathy and show great care and love towards each other and the world we live in.

June 19 – 23
The Clothes Donation Drive by Life Programme collected 870kg of clothes from 113 donors across GELM, GEGM, and GETB to be recycled or upcycled by Kloth Circularity, an organisation that turns waste into new products and resources with higher material value and purpose.

Uplifting underprivileged communities in Malaysia

Uplifting underprivileged communities in Malaysia

Sharing Ramadan blessings through in-kind donations

Following the GREAT Ramadan & GREAT Aidiladha initiative, employees of Great Eastern Malaysia shared their blessings with the residents of Pertubuhan Islam Peribadi Mulia and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ulul Azmi in the form of in-kind distribution to improve their lives.

Staying true to the purpose of helping people to help one another in times of need, a total collection of RM4,000 has benefited residents. The funds were used to purchase personal and self-care needs, groceries and household items.

The items were handed over in July, in a ceremony held at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ulul Azmi by the Head of Marketing, Nurul Sheila Khalib, in the presence of the residents, who were delighted with the assistance received. Thank you to the employees of GETB, GELM and GEGM who supported and donated towards this initiative – they have lived up to the spirit of reach for great with the vulnerable community that needs help the most.

The GREAT Aidiladha Programme

GETB participated in Kembara Korban in June, which is a large-scale qurban activity organised by the Yayasan Budi Islam Malaysia (YBIM). GETB contributed two cows worth almost RM12,000. The qurban meat was distributed to six beneficiaries which house the underprivileged communities within Klang Valley.

The qurban meat handover ceremony by YBIM took place at Pusat Pengumpulan Hasil Pertanian where frozen packed meat was handed to GETB representatives. The total contribution of 70kg of qurban meat was frozen to ensure its freshness upon delivery to the respective beneficiaries.

This initiative enabled beneficiaries to celebrate the festivities while living up to the spirit of kindness and Islamic practices associated with Aidiladha.

The GREAT Comfund to Reach for a Greater Tomorrow

The GREAT Comfund

In line with the spirit of Reach for a Greater Tomorrow, Great Eastern Life Indonesia (GELI) combined Comfund activities for each division. The sustainability edition of Comfund called The GREAT Comfund ran from July to September 2023.

The session was targeted at helping the residents to develop their businesses more efficiently with good financial management, especially by getting used to a culture of having an emergency fund or insurance.

GELI is committed to helping communities and individuals through such initiatives so that they can realise their own version of Great and Reach for Great.

Mangrove planting and financial education for farmers in Indonesia

Mangrove planting and financial education for farmers in Indonesia

Great Eastern Life Indonesia partnered with Carbon Ethics, an organisation focusing on blue carbon restoration, to create awareness about the importance of protecting and restoring the blue carbon ecosystem. This ecosystem comprises of mangroves, seagrass, and seaweeds which help in absorbing heat and reducing carbon emissions.

Great Eastern Life Indonesia planted 115 Blue Carbon Packages or a bundle of mangrove seedlings to symbolise Great Eastern’s 115th Anniversary and an additional 27 packages symbolising Great Eastern Life Indonesia Anniversary. These can absorb 14.058kg of CO2 emissions and preserve coastal ecosystems.

Run To Care 2023

Great Eastern Life Indonesia sponsored Run To Care 2023 Semarang-Yogyakarta 155km which was initiated by SOS Children's Village Indonesia, the largest charity providing alternative family-based care for children without parental care as well as assistance for vulnerable children and families. SOS Children's Village is present in 136 countries globally including Indonesia.

Supporting Run To Care 2023 is reflective of Great Eastern Life Indonesia's commitment towards fulfilling the basic rights of Indonesian children under the care of SOS Children's Village Indonesia. This is an ultra-marathon charity run that focuses on spreading the mission of goodness so that more people can participate in fulfilling the basic rights of children in need. Great Eastern Life Indonesia also invited employees to participate in Run for a Greater Tomorrow for a distance of 27km — in line with the commemoration of the 27th anniversary of Great Eastern Life Indonesia in August. Real Talk with Jeffrey Lowe, Group Chief Internal Auditor

Real Talk with Jeffrey Lowe

1. When did you join Great Eastern? Could you share with us more about your role as Group Chief Internal Auditor?

I first joined the Company back in 2011 before taking a one-year hiatus in 2018. Over the past 12 years with Great Eastern, I’ve had the opportunity to take on different roles in Group Risk Management, Singapore Finance followed by Group Finance before landing on my current role.

The traditional role of the Group Chief Internal Auditor is to be a trusted advisor to senior leadership by providing comfort on an organisation’s governance and control framework that is built on past records. Besides this, I am also looking to transform our sample-based audit approach into population-based testing through the enablement of data analytics. In the longer term, I would like to incorporate real time or predictive audit allowing us to execute our work pro-actively.

2. What is your philosophy on the evolving trend of sustainability auditing?

Sustainability auditing is crucial as it helps assess and improve the environmental, social and economic impact of organisations. It's a positive trend that promotes accountability and responsible practices, aligning with the global focus on environmental protection and ethical business conduct. Similarly at Great Eastern, where there is a sharper focus on the environment and sustainability, internal audit plays a crucial role in ensuring that this added focus is executed in a clear, organised and consistent manner.

3. Have you faced any challenges such as pandemic-related disruptions, and how have you and your team overcome them?

The Covid-19 pandemic brought on the most significant and diverse challenges to us, with issues ranging from having to weigh if business process changes are temporary, to how remote working has affected our audit processes and, throughout the process, managing the expectations of auditors, auditees, senior management and the Board. As Covid-19 raged on, I started to appreciate remote working as it brings about a level of flexibility and efficiency I have never experienced – yet, at the same time, I started realising that this mode of working has a negative impact on employee wellness and team building. Video conferences may be effective but the absence of physical interaction led to fewer spontaneous conversations and a difficulty in building or maintaining relationships with co-workers. I would not say that we have successfully overcome the challenges of the pandemic yet, but I believe that the key to overcoming these challenges and coming out stronger is for everyone to have patience, be nimble and agile and be in constant communication.

4. What do you like to do in your free time (outside of work)?

My friends used to know me as a person who hated activities which involve sweating but the last 3 years of the pandemic have changed me. Health and fitness is now an integral part of my life and I relish the challenges of setting new personal best every time I start a workout.

Of course, just like any Singaporean, nothing makes me happier than enjoying good food and wine with my friends and family.

5. What keeps you going/inspires you?

I have a strong desire to see progress, so having a goal and achieving the goal serves as a great motivator for me.

6. A good leader is……

A person who leaves a positive impact on others, acts with integrity, cares for others, is humble and has a big heart. He or she should also be a person who dares to make the first move, takes ownership of decisions made and translates vision into reality.

A Great time with the family at The Great Family Play Day

Parenting doesn’t need perfection - it just needs a little help. As parents, nothing beats seeing the happy faces of your little ones. That’s why we created The Great Family Play Day, a full day of fun on 16 July 2023 at the Sports Hub, to help parents create memories and more laughter for (and with) their kids.

The Great Family Play Day
The Great Family Play Day

It was gratifying to see 600 customers and their families having fun at seven different sports stations, catching candy from the Candy Cannon, and enjoying snacks and drinks together. Their beaming faces said it all as they put their camaraderie and skills to test in achieving their family and individual bests at the games. The young ones were equally involved in activities such as archery, basketball and soccer as they aspired to #ReachforGreat.

Engaging employees through the LIFE Programme

The LIFE Programme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year! Since 2013, this has been a flagship programme at Great Eastern empowering our colleagues to take charge of their personal well-being.

Over the years, this programme has pivoted from physical well-being to encompass a more holistic approach towards total well-being, covering Physical Health, Mental Health, Financial Health and Social Well-Being. In celebration of this significant milestone, we have rolled out “The Perfect 10” this year – 10 special activities to commemorate 10 years of Moving Together as One in shaping wellness in our organisation.

Aromatherapy Workshop

Aromatherapy has been widely known to do wonders for our personal well-being. A specially curated 2-in-1 Fragrance Mist & Aroma Balm workshop was organised for colleagues in Singapore. Through this fun and interactive workshop, our colleagues had the opportunity to take a break from work, recharge and indulge in the soothing power of aromatherapy while fostering meaningful connections with their fellow colleagues. At the end of the session, they were also able to take home their custom scented fragrance mist and aroma balm – much to their delight.

The aim was to create an environment that encourages collaboration, communication, and creativity among employees. As a result, the old office layout with cubicles was replaced with an open space design. The corners of the office have been specifically designed to remind us of our sustainability efforts.

To create a delightful experience for employees, a self-service coffee machine from Jump was introduced so that employees can buy coffee easily.

In the office pantry there are posters with various sustainability messages to start a zero-waste lifestyle such as ‘bring your own lunch boxes and cutlery’, ‘bring your own tumbler’, ‘bring your own shopping bags’ as well as messages to avoid food wastage. Even the office toilet has a reminder to use toilet paper wisely for our forest sustainability and not to waste clean water.

Making a Great Start to Adulting: New-to-workforce and First Jobbers

Making a Great Start to Adulting: New-to-workforce and First Jobbers

Adulting is tough. After getting their first pay cheque, first jobbers are not only responsible for their own lives and finances, but are sometimes expected to shoulder financial responsibilities such as contributing to the household. Compounded with high inflation and surging prices these days, new jobbers are feeling the pinch more than ever before.

With new-found financial responsibilities and high cost of living, first jobbers are anxious and unsure of how to start their financial journey while they balance their own dreams and aspirations. Growing up as digital natives, they are also voracious consumers of social media, and have very short attention spans.

This is where Great Eastern comes in. We aim to help these new jobbers navigate their financial journey and be the partner that they can rely on to achieve their dreams and Reach for Great, in a fun and snappy manner. Through a series of six different short videos with topics like financial planning, wealth accumulation and protection, we enable our new jobbers to #ReachforGreat in just 10 seconds!

Celebrating the success of Financial Storyboard

Celebrating the success of Financial Storyboard

Since the launch of Singapore Financial Industry Data Exchange (SGFinDex) in November 2022, Great Eastern has been the first insurer to offer a platform for customers to aggregate their financial data within a mobile application—the Great Eastern app. Great Eastern is also the first in the industry to enable customers to share their financial data securely with their financial representatives.

Financial representatives can then view the data by launching the Financial Storyboard to perform a more holistic and accurate analysis of the customer’s financial position and holdings to generate a comprehensive financial plan.

Through a close collaboration between financial representatives and customers, the Financial Storyboard aims to help our customers proactively manage their finances and take ownership in planning for their financial success.

This digital financial planning tool also won the Digital Transformation Initiative Award at the Insurance Asia Awards 2023. Read more at the ‘Awards from around the Region’ category below, and click here for the video.
