Sustainability Report 2022

Sustainability Report 2022

Dear colleagues

We are happy to share with you our Sustainability Report 2022.

It is a sharing of what we are doing to promote and protect our people, planet and profits.

In case you don’t have time to read all 44 pages of it, here are the top 3 things to know about our Sustainability Report.

1. A renewed emphasis on sustainability

In January 2023, the Board has approved the Great Eastern Sustainability Strategy and will provide oversight to align and embed sustainability in our overall corporate strategy.

Founded on a tradition of trust, we are committed to using our reach and resources to support the long-term growth of our customers, employees and communities. We will comply with relevant sustainability regulations and requirements in the markets we operate in.

The world is facing unprecedented challenges in terms of political risk, economic uncertainty, divided societies and rising occurrence of climate-related disasters. We believe that the well-being of our society is important to our collective future, and we remain committed to making a positive impact to the communities in which we operate.

2. Sustainability Taskforce

We have identified our sustainability focuses, and the management-in-charge who will help us lead the way.

Sustainability Report 2022
Sustainability Report 2022

Jimmy, Ronnie, Colin and Kate are leading four key taskforces that highlight what Great Eastern prioritises in our sustainability strategy. Successful implementation needs all hands on board, and the support of all teams within the organisation.

You would be hearing from them soon, if you have not already!

3. We have made good progress, though a lot still needs to be done

A big Thank You to everyone who has been working with us on this journey - across all business functions, departments and entities within the Great Eastern network.

The world today presents many uncertainties. Our approach may adapt to the fast-changing external environment but our focus on customer satisfaction and sustained business growth remains unwavering.

Investing in our planet

Earth Day

To mark Earth Day this year, our colleagues in Singapore and Malaysia came together to show our support to protect our planet as we learn to take action through eco-conscious activities and contribute to a low-carbon economy.

In Singapore, we had a variety of activities that our colleagues could participate in, from a Pre-Loved Items Donation Drive to a Fashion Swap Activity. We also held a bazaar, featuring various eco-friendly goods and items from eco-conscious local vendors.

We are proud to share that in Singapore, we collected the following:

Investing in our planet

*CO2 savings are unverified estimates. All figures are collated from event data and referenced from various onlines sources (including https://www.upc.edu/en/press-room/news/reusing-1-kg-of-clothing-saves-25-kg-of-co2-according-to-a-study-by-intexter & https://www.spgroup.com.sg/)

In Malaysia, a group of our colleagues took the lead and volunteered to share with fellow colleagues the importance of upcycling and demonstrate how colleagues could make use of a plastic recycling machine to generate new items and give the used plastics a new lease of life. Colleagues were also encouraged to bring their used plastic bottles to purchase soap from Single Step, a vendor which sells eco-friendly soap. A non-profit organisation, Tzu Chi, was also invited to educate staff on how to recycle commonly found household items responsibly. To end the day, food vouchers were given out instead of packed or catered lunch as part of our efforts to minimise food waste.

At Great Eastern, we believe in protecting the environment and promoting a greener way of life. Thank you to everyone who joined us in these eco-friendly activities this Earth Day. Let’s continue to take active steps to invest in our planet and reach for a greener tomorrow together!

Earth Hour

In support of Earth Hour 2023, Great Eastern Life joined millions of people across the globe on 25 March 2023 (Saturday) from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to show collective support for the Earth and make a difference against climate change. Earth Hour is a global ‘lights off’ movement organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

External and non-essential lights at 17 Great Eastern properties across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia were switched off for 60 minutes to mark our support for this sustainability movement.

We hope this movement inspires individuals, communities and organisations to take collaborative steps to tackle climate change beyond this 60 minutes.

GELS HOD Townhall

Our first HOD Town Hall of the year in Singapore was held on 5 May, with 75 participants in attendance.

In Group CEO Khor Hock Seng’s kick-off update on the Q1 2023 Financial Results, he shared that we achieved margin improvements for our life business across all markets compared to the same period last year. The long-term growth of the group remains positive given our distribution capabilities, digital solutions and comprehensive suite of products. He continued to recap and reflect on the improvements in the Speaking Up culture in Great Eastern which was achieved through the Leadership Huddle and MLG workshops last year, as well as what staff can expect for the rest of the year as we transit our focus to our working culture.

Patrick Kok, MD of Group Operations, gave an update on how the group continuously explored possibilities to leverage our digital capabilities to improve customer experience. One example is the launch of the new AIDA medical claims operation system, an AI system designed to learn from claims data history to make decisions and enable end-to-end automation of medical claims processing. With AIDA, we are confident that the downstream activities will be in a better position to help support the delivery of our customer experience, customer centricity as well as the building of our brand moving forward.

Zhao Jingyuan, Group Chief Data Officer, shared on the current and future plans and initiatives to build a data-powered Great Eastern with the following capabilities:

  1. Building of a modern Data and AI Platform to provide accessible and reliable data;
  2. Scale analytics and AI in a responsible manner;
  3. Empower everyone in Great Eastern to make data-driven decisions.

Jingyuan also quoted successful case studies both internally and externally, as a result of cross-divisional collaboration. Some examples include (1) AI-driven marketing which has helped to deepen the understanding of our customers and to push out targeted communications (DxB, GEG, RAFABA, Group Data) (2) Personalised app banners or notifications to enhance customer experience (DxB, GEG, RAFABA, Group Data) (3) Customised dashboards to enhance marketing effectiveness, branding and business results (Group Marketing, Group Data) (4) Data-driven operations to further enhance employees’ productivity and customer experience (Group Operation, Group Data).

In the next few months, a series of courses that cater to different data users within the organisation will be rolled out to help educate and elevate how employees can use data effectively in daily operations.

Winnie Tan, SVP of Sustainability, shared that the Group’s Sustainability Report for 2022 had been published – all thanks to the collective efforts of the different stakeholders across the Group. She also reiterated the key pillars in our sustainability strategy and shared on the upcoming initiatives and programmes to engage all employees.

Colin Chan, MD of Group Marketing who leads the Community and Culture taskforce, shared on how the taskforce’s work plan contributes to the ‘Social’ impact of the Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) approach. He also unveiled a new volunteer programme and encouraged all employees to take the lead to either organise or take part in the various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities that will be rolled out in the months ahead.

Colleagues across the offices in Singapore were treated to a floral arrangement workshop, where they took the opportunity to take a breather amidst their busy schedules – while building impactful connections with colleagues and team members through this mood-lifting therapeutic workshop. They also learnt about the process involved in preserving flowers and were free to unleash their creativity to design their own preserved blooms. Many of them were beaming with joy as they proudly showcased their masterpieces at the end of the session.

Meet the team behind the Ketupat Competition

A great culture plays a vital role in ensuring our company’s success. It makes Great Eastern a great place to work at, where all colleagues share the same beliefs and work together as one. By living the core values and generic skills and competencies (GSCs) in our everyday work, we can #ReachforGreat in everything we do.

A few weeks back, our colleagues from Group IT came together to organise a Ketupat Competition in celebration of the Hari Raya Festivities. Learn more about our GSCs and how our colleagues from Group IT have Taken The Lead and embedded it into their ways of working as they deliver their best.

Meet the team behind the Ketupat Competition

1. Why did you decide to organise a Ketupat Competition for your colleagues?

We wanted to take the opportunity to strengthen our team bonding, to showcase our talented colleagues and promote cultural awareness and appreciation during the Hari Raya festive season. By holding a competition, our colleagues were definitely more motivated to learn the skills of ketupat weaving which encouraged teamwork and collaboration. We hope that it was a memorable and enjoyable session for our fellow colleagues!

2. Did you face any unexpected challenges during the planning and execution and how did you overcome these challenges?

It is important to ensure that all of our colleagues were involved – even if they were not taking part in the competition. As such we brainstormed amongst the team and decided to have a corner where colleagues could still learn the art of ketupat weaving and be kept engaged. We also had to take into consideration the space limitation of the venue and source for a spacious lunch venue for the participating teams.

3. How did the core values help you out when planning this event?

In planning any event, it is important to be accountable and be aware of your own specific roles and responsibilities to ensure the successful rollout of the event.

It is also critical to be customer oriented to know the needs of our stakeholders, in this case, our internal stakeholders, and proactively engage them to ensure that they have a positive experience joining the event. As such, the team even went a step further to prepare a simple yet entertaining video clip on ketupat weaving which was shared with our colleagues during the event so that they could better understand the process and prepare themselves.

Workplace transformation – Role model contest

Workplace transformation – Role model contest

The successful conclusion of the workplace transformation project at levels 12 and 13 of Great Eastern Centre would not have been possible without the effort and dedication of our colleagues who worked tirelessly from pre- to post-move. We asked for our colleagues who were part of the Phase 1 workplace transformation journey to nominate individuals who had been a role model throughout the entire process and are pleased to present Chua Yijun and Kelson Guee from Group Operations as our winners for the contest.

Learn more about our GSCs and how our role models have embedded it into their ways of working as they #ReachforGreat to deliver their best for their teams.

Aligned with ChildrenCare’s core pillar of Personal Development, the workshop was organised in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri for the children to develop creative thinking skills while adopting good personal hygiene.

The children from Rumah Bakti Nur Syaheera, Rumah KIDS and House of Love enjoyed the natural fragrance from dried fruits and flowers, as the volunteers guided them through the value of sustainable living. GEGI provides learning aid to fishermen’s children

Great Eastern General Insurance Indonesia (GEGI) refurbished the Oky Classroom located in Kampung Nelayan (fisherman’s village) in Cilincing, North Jakarta, benefiting 65 underprivileged children.

Established since 2010, the free-of-charge Oky Classroom was founded by Mrs. Oky Setiarso and managed by volunteers. The classroom space located at the 2nd floor of a house has been offered free for use by the lady owner.

At the handover ceremony held on 25 May, GEGI’s representatives purchased groceries for the lady owner and gifted a 43-inch television to be used as a learning aid. GEGI’s staff also raised funds to purchase books and stationeries for the children.

From wooden planks to a full concrete floor, from a leaking to a fully repaired roof, the classroom is now in better condition to provide educational support to the fishermen’s children.

Reach for Great Sharing initiative
Reach for Great Sharing initiative
Reach for Great Sharing initiative

Following the brand refresh exercise in last August, our life insurance team in Indonesia participated in the Reach for Great Grant (RFG Grant) programme, where they submitted aspiring proposals that create positive impact to the society. After rounds of assessment, the following two proposals were finally selected and executed in January and February 2023.

These two proposals are part of the Reach for Great Sharing initiative that aims to share and care for the Indonesian community.

RFG Grant winning proposal (1): Providing internet access to villages

Alfi Yani, an employee of Great Eastern Life Indonesia (GELI), proposed to provide internet access for Hegarmanah Village, Garut, West Java.

The village was first granted free internet access in 2020 when Covid struck. By end of 2022, only four out of eight sub districts had received the complimentary access, with the remaining four to be granted progressively by 2026.

From December 2022 to January 2023, GELI sped up the progress by entering the remaining four sub districts and successfully installed internet fibre system for all open spaces, including rice fields, schools and village halls.

RFG Grant winning proposal (2): Building a Montessori day-care centre

Another GELI employee, Ahmad Isnaini Hasan, was the second winner of the RFG Grant. He initiated to build a day-care centre for children under five-year-old.

The establishment of Nadine’s Home Daycare, a non-profit centre located in Cilodong, Depok provides a safe haven for the children to learn through play time by adopting Montessori method.

GELI hopes that the RFG Grant will be the starting point for both Hegarmanah Village and Nadine’s Home Daycare to grow, so that the villagers and children can Reach for Great realisation of dreams.

Spreading the joy of Ramadan

Apart from the RFG Grant programme, GELI also shared the joy of Ramadan with children from the Tebet Orphanage.

The iftar event was attended by 18 representatives from GELI who opened the fast together with 47 orphans and 8 caregivers on 5 April. It was a heart-warming evening for all as they shared dinner together and witnessed the presentation of the donation by Dr. Umar Al-Haddad M.Ag, Chairman of GELI's Sharia Supervisory Board, who also shared a few words of encouragement with the children.

Great Eastern Life Indonesia (GELI) held a financial literacy webinar on 7 March 2023, themed "Reach for Great Generation: It's Time to Change the Perspective of Sandwich Generation to Great Generation". Sandwich generation is known as the ‘caught in the middle’ generation that not only supports themselves but also has care taking responsibilities for their children and elderly parents or other family members.

At Great Eastern, we call this generation as the ‘Great Generation’. The Reach for Great Generation Campaign began since last October, sparking conversations around Instagram – with more than 340 members of the public sharing their personal journey – to show support towards the Great Generation.

During the webinar, invited speakers shared their perspectives and experiences with 175 attendees and how the Great Generation could truly Reach for Great with sound financial management knowledge and be the greatest version of themselves.

The speakers were: Tarra Budiman, actor and entrepreneur; Rista Zwestika, financial planner; and Daniel Herjun Putranto, Head of Group Insurance and Affinity, GELI.

Amazing Journey Krung Thep

The next day after the Bancassurance Annual Award 2023, top qualifiers from GELI jetted off to Bangkok, colloquially known as Krung Thep, for the ‘Amazing Journey Krung Thep’ where they were greeted with flower garlands upon arrival for their first meal of the trip.

The spirit of Reach for Great spread across Chinatown as the participants waved their small red flags bearing Great Eastern’s logo on the motorised rickshaws or tuk-tuks. The heat in Bangkok did not deter them from enjoying a mouth-watering durian feast before they embarked on the Thai Bus Food Tour to experience Michelin-starred cuisine on board a double-decker bus, while admiring the beauty of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks.

Besides free-and-easy shopping time, participants also visited the Big Buddha and the 78-floor Mahanakhon Skywalk for a 360° view of the city before a scrumptious buffet dinner on the Chao Phraya Cruise.

It is hoped that GELI’s FA, RBM, and SRBM will continue to Reach for Great performance throughout 2023 and meet again in Korea next year.
