With 6 in 7 Singaporeans yet to make a Lasting Power of Attorney, Great Eastern deepens multi-year push for family resilience

Great Eastern accelerates efforts to close the family resilience and continuity gap with its inaugural Retirement and Legacy Planning Fair which aims to facilitate additional LPA certifications

Singapore, 21 July 2026 – Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), a family facing a loved one’s sudden loss of mental capacity may find itself without any legal authority to act – with no one formally empowered to make decisions on their behalf – a gap that can turn a medical emergency into something bigger.

As of February 2026, 6 in 7 Singaporeans have not made an LPA1; this is a family resilience and continuity gap Great Eastern has been working to close since 2024. To accelerate efforts, Great Eastern today announced that it will facilitate additional LPA certifications at its upcoming Retirement and Legacy Planning Fair, a fair that promotes understanding across retirement and healthcare planning to active ageing, caregiving support and legacy preparation. The initiative extends a multi-year commitment that has seen Great Eastern invest close to S$750,000 to-date in support of Singapore’s broader efforts to encourage pre-planning and strengthen family resilience.

This commitment builds on the ongoing Great Legacy programme, through which Great Eastern has facilitated more 7,000 LPA certifications through 100 complimentary certification clinics since 2024. About 40 per cent of individuals who completed their LPA registrations through these clinics were below the age of 50, reflecting a shift in mindsets and the recognition that legacy planning is relevant across all life stages, and not only later in life.

At its core, an LPA allows individuals to appoint trusted persons to make decisions on their behalf should they lose mental capacity in the future, including filing insurance claims and managing payouts, ensuring loved ones are better prepared to navigate important life decisions with clarity.

"Anyone can lose mental capacity unexpectedly due to stroke, an accident, or other medical conditions. As Singapore’s homegrown insurer, we want to help Singaporeans plan ahead across different life phases, and even through unexpected circumstances in life. This means empowering our loved ones to enact decisions on our behalf when the need arises,” said Kwek-Perroy Li Choo, Managing Director, Great Eastern.

"With a rapidly aging population and as responsibilities continue to mount on the sandwiched generation, we continue to advocate earlier-stage financial planning for Singaporeans. We are encouraged to see more young Singaporeans taking action in securing their future, and that of their families. Whether in raising financial literacy levels through the Great FinChamp Challenge, or building financial security through tailored propositions, we remain committed to supporting families on their journey towards lifelong financial wellness."

Mdm Rayahu Buang, Public Guardian, Ministry of Social and Family Development, said, “As Singapore becomes a super aged society, legacy planning has become increasingly important. Beyond financial preparedness, making legacy plans early such as a Lasting Power of Attorney, can provide peace of mind for both the individuals and their families. We welcome Great Eastern's efforts to encourage more Singaporeans to safeguard their future well-being and strengthen family resilience.”

Through Great Legacy, Great Eastern has made LPA certifications more accessible by bringing together accredited medical practitioners and its network of Great Legacy Ambassadors to guide Singaporeans through the certification process. More than 1,450 financial representatives and advisers, representing more than a quarter of Great Eastern’s advisory force, are Great Legacy Ambassadors today. These advisers help customers understand how legacy planning complements broader financial planning alongside protection, wealth accumulation and retirement planning.

Making planning support more accessible at the Retirement and Legacy Planning Fair

Taking place from 28 July to 2 August 2026, 10am to 10pm at Suntec City Atrium Tower 1 and 2, the Retirement and Legacy Planning Fair will offer complimentary LPA certification to Great Eastern customers and their families, as well as members of the public.

Designed to support Singaporeans across different aspects of retirement readiness, and to plan confidently for their future, the Fair offers a range of interactive activities, tools and expert resources across four pillars: Health, Well-being, Wealth and Legacy. Visitors can also get support with legacy planning queries and make or review their CPF nominations, helping them better plan for their loved ones using the various legacy planning tools available to them.

Members of the public interested in the complimentary LPA certification slots may register online by 24 July 2026. Limited slots are available: https://www.greateasternlife.com/sg/en/personal-insurance/rewards-and-promotions/rewards/workshop-and-events/great-legacy-lpa1.html
