About Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

 

1. What is an LPA?

An LPA allows you to appoint trusted person(s) to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity.

 

2. Is LPA only for older adults?

No. Anyone aged 21 and above can make an LPA.

 

3. Will I lose control after making an LPA?

No. You remain in control unless you lose mental capacity.

 

4. Who can be my Donee?

Any trusted person aged 21 and above. For property and affairs matters, the Donee must not be an undischarged bankrupt.

 

5. Can foreigners apply for an LPA?

Yes, subject to OPG’s eligibility requirements.

 

6. Can I change or revoke my LPA?

Yes, as long as you have mental capacity.

 

7. Do my Donee(s) need to attend the certification session?

No.

 

About the Event

 

8. Is LPA certification free?

LPA certification is usually chargeable. Complimentary certification is available during this event, subject to terms and conditions.

 

9. Can I attend the event without applying for an LPA?

Yes.

 

10. Are walk-ins allowed?

Walk-ins are not encouraged and are subject to availability.

 

Registration & Queue

 

11. What happens if I miss my scheduled timeslot?

Late arrivals may be accommodated on a best-effort basis, subject to availability.

 

12. Can I change my timeslot after registration?

No.

 

13. What happens if I miss my queue number?

You will need to obtain a new queue number and rejoin the queue. Your original queue position may be forfeited.

 

14. Will I be served immediately after obtaining a new queue number?

No. Please note that, depending on queue conditions and operation requirements, other participants may be called ahead of you. As such, you may not be served immediately after obtaining a new queue number. 

 

LPA Application Journey

 

15. What is the LPA application journey? 

Step 1: Understand LPA

Learn what an LPA is, why it matters and how it helps protect your future decisions if you lose mental capacity.

Step 2: Choose Your Donee(s)

Choose trusted person(s), aged 21 and above, who can make decision for you when you needed.

Step 3: Draft Your LPA Online

Log in to OPG Online using Singpass, fill in your details, appoint your donee(s) and decide what powers to grant.

Step 4: Donee Acceptance

Your donee(s) will receive a notification and must log in to OPG Online vis Singpass to accept the appointment.

Step 5: Attend LPA Certification

Visit the Certificate Issuer at the event. They will verify your identity, explain the LPA and ensure you understand it. The confirmation of no pressure and fraud are needed.

Step 6: Submit for Registration

Once certified, the LPA will be digitally signed and submitted to Office of the Public Guardian for registration.

Step 7: Receive Confirmation

You and your donee(s) will be notified one the digital LPA is accepted and registered.

NOTE: Before attending the LPA certification session, you are required to complete Step 1-4 and receive the "gov.sg" SMS notification for verification purpose. Please have the SMS notification and Singpass app ready during the event to facilitate the certification process.
