Burning questions from the floor at the Great Eastern Rewards Health event – Matters of the Heart, answered by esteemed speakers, Clinical Associate Professor Tan Swee Yaw and Dr Wang Luo-Kai from National Heart Centre Singapore.

Clinical Associate Professor Tan Swee Yaw:
Unfortunately in Singapore, there is so much good food that has very high bad cholesterol, and you have to watch in moderation. One of the best foods to naturally bring down your cholesterol is oats. I have a patient who only takes raw oats in the morning and had a 30% drop in Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL). But it doesn’t work for everyone. Instant oats works too but make sure to look out for too much cream and sugar. Oatmilk

Associate Consultant Dr Wang Luo-Kai:
Eggs are considered neutral but avoid excessive amounts. Not more than 2 to 4 times a week.

Clinical Associate Professor Tan Swee Yaw:
If you are a kidney patient you will have to watch your protein. But for normal patients, you can take as much egg whites as you want. There’s a lot of good nutrients inside the egg yolk, especially for the eyes.
