A recap of the ‘Matters of the Heart’ event

Studies have shown that one in five Singaporeans has one or more Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk factors1 that affect the heart or blood vessels.

Driven by this finding, Heart health became a mouthpiece that headlined the first of four events in the Great Eastern Rewards Health campaign. The objective is to communicate and engage with customers to help them better understand about Heart health through a series of activities.

An event was held on 15 June, where Great Eastern customers attended Heart health talks by our esteemed speakers and participated in booth activities by our merchants. Watch the event highlights above.

Want to find out more about heart health? Enjoy the talks by Clinical Associate Professor Tan Swee Yaw on Exercise and the heart, and Dr Wang Luo-Kai from National Heart Centre Singapore on The 3 highs and Non-traditional Cardiovascular Risk Markers, below.

Exercise and the heart

Benefits of exercise for a stronger heart and cardiovascular system

  • Download and use the health risk calculator app to assess own cardiovascular risk.
  • Consider coronary artery calcium scoring or additional lipid testing for patients in the intermediate risk category.
  • Follow the ABCDE approach for primary prevention - assess risk, control blood pressure and cholesterol, stop smoking, healthy diet and exercise, manage diabetes.
The 3 highs and Non-traditional Cardiovascular Risk Markers

Combating the 3 highs: Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes

  • Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking daily.
  • Pay attention to intensity of exercise using heart rate monitors or by checking exertion levels. Stop if feeling unwell.
  • Slowly increase exercise levels and don't suddenly start intense programs after illnesses like COVID.
